On the Road Again

After two consecutive home contests last week, the Hawks are back on the bus for a trek to Kennewick. Portland has outscored opponents 14-7 on the road this season, and their only shutout of the year so far came in Kamloops as they topped the Blazers 3-0 in the season opener.

In their only other meeting thus far, the Winterhawks toppled the Americans 4-2 at the VMC on Oct. 1. Luke Schelter grabbed the game-winner, and Jan Špunar notched his first WHL victory.

Oh Captain(s)

On Thursday, Head Coach & GM Mike Johnston announced the team’s leadership group for the season.

Gabe Klassen was named the 48th captain in Winterhawks history, with Robbie Fromm-Delorme, Kyle Chyzowski and Jack O’Brien becoming alternate captains as well.

“It feels awesome to be chosen to wear the ‘C’ for such a great organization with a lot of history,” said Klassen, “Throughout my time in Portland, I’ve learned how professional everyone here is and it means a lot to be a leader on this team. I’d like to thank my teammates and coaches for the opportunity and privilege to be captain and I’m excited to see where we can take our group this year!”

Klassen, who has been skating in a regular jersey during practice this week after previously being listed as day-to-day, could make his debut as captain in Kennewick tonight.

Hot Stef

James Stefan has been as consistent as they come since returning from the LA Kings’ training camp for the Hawks’ home opener, recording at least one point in each of his five games played. He is the only Winterhawk with an active point streak of more than two games and ranks tied for fourth in team scoring with Gabe Klassen.

Keep an eye on #13 as he looks to extend his solid run tonight!
