Getting Busy

Tonight’s tilt marks the first of a four-games-in-five-days stretch for the Winterhawks, including a three-in-three against U.S. Division rivals this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After taking on the Cougars tonight, the Hawks battle with Seattle at home on Friday, then in Kent on Saturday, before wrapping up the week with a contest against Spokane at home on Sunday.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hectic schedule and heated rivalry matchups on the horizon, but the Hawks will be keen to start it all off by picking up two points against a team they handled well last season.

Playoff Rematch

These two clubs may play 18 hours apart, but they know each other well after eight meetings last year. Portland topped Prince George in all four matchups during the regular season, then grabbed four consecutive hard-fought wins in their first-round playoff series. But while Portland’s veterans led the way for the Hawks, Prince George’s main talent came from a handful of young players who now boast a year of experience in the WHL, presenting a different challenge for the Winterhawks this time around.

Speaking of young talent…

NHL Caliber

If you’re coming to tonight’s game, make sure to grab a popcorn – with five players on NHL Central Scouting’s initial watch list, this is must-see action.

Portland boasts a B-rated skater and a couple of C-rated skaters in Luca Cagnoni, Carter Sotheran and Jan Špunar, while Prince George features one of seven A-rated WHL skaters in Riley Heidt and another highly talented B-rated player in Koehn Ziemmer. That’s three players projected to go in the first three rounds of the 2023 NHL Draft and two more who could find their way into the mix given their current trajectory.
