Four-Goal Second Propels Stars Past Lancers

October 8, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL)Lincoln Stars News Release

Keaton Peters scored twice and the Lincoln Stars defeated the Omaha Lancers, 6-1, on Saturday night at the Ice Box.

The Stars (3-1) scored two power-play goals in the first period and four even-strength goals in the second period to match their season-high for goals scored. Those four second period goals came in a five-minute span as they handed the Lancers (1-1-1-1) their first regulation loss of the 2022-23 season.

“I liked our compete level from start to finish,” Stars head coach Rocky Russo said. “They were energetic in warmups, we had a really good week of practice and we were able to take advantage of a couple of early opportunities.”

Peters took over the team lead in goals scored with a power play goal on a scramble in front of the net at 12:13 of the first and then scored the third goal of the second period for his third of the season.

Michael Mesic and Wyatt Olson scored their first goals with the Stars with back-to-back tallies. Mesic potted home a rebound for a power-play goal at 16:55 of the first and then Olson scored the first goal of the second period with a deflection on a shot from Cole Crusberg-Roseen shortly after a Stars faceoff win.

Klavs Veinbergs extended the Stars’ lead to 4-0 at the 5:30 mark of the second on a two-on-one rush. Boston Buckberger fed him in front and Veinbergs’ first shot was stopped but he backhanded his own rebound past Lancers netminder Kevin Pasche.

The Stars’ final goal came on another nice setup as Mason Marcellus scooped up a loose puck out of the corner, skated to the net and set up Doug Grimes backdoor, near-post side to make it 6-0, Stars, at the 8:22 mark of the second period.

Omaha’s lone goal came when Evan Werner scored on a shorthanded breakaway early in the third.

Lucas Massie stopped 21-of-22 shots in his first USHL appearance in net. He denied Alex Bump on a breakaway game a minute in and helped keep the game scoreless before the Stars took over the game.

“(He) made a couple of huge saves early on,” Russo said, “that could have totally changed the complexion of the game. He looked like a veteran in net for a guy who has never played in the USHL before.”

The Stars have a home-and-home next weekend against the Tri-City Storm with the first game coming on Oct. 14 at 7:05 p.m. at the Ice Box. Tickets can be purchased now at lincolnstars.com.
