First Inning Scoring Leads Y’alls Past Slammers
September 1, 2022 – Frontier League (FL) – Florence Y’alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY – Florence scored four unearned first inning runs against Joliet, and despite not scoring a single run for the rest of the game the Y’alls held on for a 4-3 victory at Thomas More Stadium Thursday night.
Florence (38-54) wins the series against Joliet (47-46), the second time in as many series they have beaten the Slammers at home. Joliet won both series at Duly Health and Care Field.
Spencer Johnston should have had a three-up, three-down first inning. Instead, a three-base throwing error by third baseman Brylie Ware soon resulted in four Y’alls runs. Alberti Chavez reached third on the error and scored one batter later on a Brennan Price fielder’s choice ground out. Ray Zuberer, Bryant Flete, and Ethan Stern recorded three consecutive hits to make it 3-0. Stern came around to score from second on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the catcher for the 4-0.
After that, Florence was quiet for the remainder of the evening. Johnston tossed five more innings of scoreless baseball and takes the tough loss. Edgar Martinez, on the other hand, surrendered all of his runs on the back end of his outing. The righty cruised through six innings and struck out seven. But in the seventh, Martinez allowed five consecutive hits – highlighted by a Matt McGarry three-run home run – to pull Joliet within a 4-3 score.
Karl Craigie stranded two runners on base in the seventh in relief, striking out Matt Feinstein to end the threat with runners on second and third. Kent Klyman pitched a clean eighth, and Joe Dougherty earned his second save in as many days in the ninth to close out the Florence win. It’s Dougherty’s tenth save of the season.
Zuberer had three hits and two doubles for the Y’alls, and Flete had a pair of hits and an RBI as well. Ware and McGarry had a multi-hit night for the Slammers.
The Y’alls wrap up the 2022 season this weekend with a three-game series against the Evansville Otters. It is Fan Appreciation Weekend at Thomas More Stadium. It starts with a Firework Friday tomorrow night, Friday, September 2 with a 7:03 PM EDT first pitch.
