Earthquakes Weekly Update: September 6, 2022

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0 on Sunday at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif. Center back Rodrigues made his MLS debut and led the Quakes to their first shutout victory since May 5. His performance earned him a selection to the MLS Team of the Week.


Also last week, the Quakes announced the signing of free agent defender Miguel Trauco to a contract through the 2023 Major League Soccer season with a club option for 2024. Trauco, a member of the Peru National Team, will occupy an international spot on the Earthquakes roster, pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC.

The Earthquakes will now prepare for back-to-back road matches, first traveling to Ohio for the Quakes’ first-ever road match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 10. The match will kick off from TQL Stadium at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KSFO 560 (English) and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

Captain Jackson

Midfielder Jackson Yueill tallied an assist on Ebobisse’s goal, marking his second assist of the season and 12th of his MLS career. It also marked his first game-winning assist of the season and fourth of his MLS career.

Chasing History

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza tallied an assist on Monteiro’s goal, marking his 12th assist of the season and 42nd of his MLS career. He is now two assists away from tying Eddie Lewis for the most assists in a single season in club history. Espinoza is also now two assists away from tying Richard Mulrooney for the second most assists in club history.

Youth Impact

Forward Cade Cowell tallied an assist on Ebobisse’s goal, marking his fifth assist of the season and first game-winning assist of the season.

Defending Our Net

Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski made six saves and recorded his third shutout of the season, marking San Jose’s first shutout since May 7 at PayPal Park (1-0 vs. COL).

MLS Debut

Defender Rodrigues made his MLS debut, starting and playing 90 minutes.

Strong at Home

The Earthquakes are now unbeaten in five straight home matches against Whitecaps FC (3-0-2).

The two clubs have only played each other once, with San Jose defeating Cincinnati 1-0 on May 4, 2019.

The Quakes will travel to face FC Cincinnati for the first time ever at TQL Stadium.

FC Cincinnati (9-8-11) enters Saturday’s match in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The Ohio side will face New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday before hosting the Quakes on Saturday.

Earthquakes Defender Rodrigues Selected to MLS Team of the Week

San Jose Earthquakes defender Rodrigues has been selected to Major League Soccer’s Team of the Week for Week 29 following the Earthquakes’ 2-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at PayPal Park on Sunday night. Rodrigues made his MLS debut, played all 90 minutes, and led the Quakes to their first shutout victory since May 5. The Earthquakes acquired Rodrigues on a 12-month loan with option to buy from Brazilian side Grêmio on Aug. 6.

Earthquakes Sign Peru National Team Defender Miguel Trauco

The San Jose Earthquakes announced on Friday that the club has signed free agent defender Miguel Trauco to a contract through the 2023 Major League Soccer season with a club option for 2024. Trauco will occupy an international spot on the Quakes’ roster, pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC. Trauco, 30, most recently played in the French first division, Ligue 1, with AS Saint-Étienne. After joining the French club for a reported fee of $1.1 million in August 2019, Trauco tallied two goals and four assists in 72 total appearances across three seasons.

Major League Soccer and Continental Tire Team Up For 9th Annual Kick Childhood Cancer Campaign

MLS, MLS WORKS – the League’s social responsibility platform – and Continental Tire are teaming up once again to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with the 9th annual “Kick Childhood Cancer” campaign to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer. In 2022, the Kick Childhood Cancer (KCC) campaign will again benefit Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research, uniting more than 10,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children’s hospitals around the world. The Kick Childhood Cancer campaign has enabled COG to strengthen research efforts across the entire spectrum of pediatric cancers, including Project: EveryChild – a unique project aiming to capture the biology and outcome data of every child diagnosed with cancer.

Enchant, presented by Hallmark Channel, Tickets Available Starting Sept. 15

Tickets for Enchant at PayPal Park will be available for purchase starting Thursday, Sept. 15. Enchant, the world’s largest holiday-themed light event, will make its first-ever holiday trip to PayPal Park from Nov. 25, 2022 – Jan. 1, 2023. The outdoor holiday event marks the first of its kind in the Bay Area. An exclusive presale for Earthquakes Season Ticket Holders will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. PT before tickets are made available to the general public on Thursday, Sept. 15. Former Defender Jordan Stewart Joins Quakes Academy as Coach

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last Wednesday that the club has hired Jordan Stewart as an assistant coach for the Quakes Academy. Stewart made more than 400 professional appearances in England and the United States, including 69 appearances in the English Premier League and 71 MLS appearances for San Jose between 2013-16.

EARTHQUAKES II UPDATE

Earthquakes II defeated Whitecaps FC 2 3-1 on Monday at PayPal Park. The result keeps Quakes II’s playoff dreams alive as they stay six points outside of the top four in the Western Conference with two games remaining in the regular season.

Earthquakes II will now host Real Monarchs on Friday Sept. 9. Originally scheduled to be played at PayPal Park, the match will now take place at Negoesco Stadium on the campus of the University of San Francisco. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. PT and will be livestreamed on MLSNEXTPro.com .

ACADEMY UPDATE

The Quakes Academy boys’ squads continue training prior to their first games of the season.

Last week, defender Kevin Jimenez and midfielder Mateo Colmenares represented San Jose at the United States U15 National Team ID Camp in Chula Vista from August 31 through September 6.
