September 4, 2022 – American Association (AA) – Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. – After the Cougars shutout the Dogs last night, Chicago returned the favor with a 3-0 victory on Sunday night at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Dogs win and the Milwaukee Milkmen’s loss to the Gary SouthShore Railcats clinched an East Division regular season title for Chicago.
Chicago (54-45) starter Jordan Kipper (9-7) tossed a gem for the Dogs. The right-hander pitched 6.1 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while striking out seven hitters against four walks. In relief of Kipper, Joe Cavallaro, Brian Schlitter, and Kevin Marnon combined to hold the Cougars scoreless over the final three innings.
After the game was hitless and scoreless for both teams through four innings, the Dogs struck against Cougars’ starter Jose Fuentes in the top of the fifth. Anfernee Grier led off the frame with a walk before reaching third on a single by Cody Bohanek. Then, Connor Kopach hit a sacrifice fly to center field that made it 1-0.
The Dogs added to their lead in the top of the seventh. After singles from Stevie Wilkerson and Grier, Bohanek laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. An RBI single by Charlie Tilson then brought in the second run of the game. The Dogs went on to add another run in the eighth on a Cougars error to make it 3-0.
In a losing effort, Jose Fuentes earned a quality start. The Cougars righty allowed just one run on one hit with four strikeouts against five walks across six innings.
The series with the Dogs concludes on Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Right-hander AJ Kullman (8-7, 3.98) will take the hill for the Dogs, while the Cougars’ starter is to be announced. Tomorrow’s game will include free parking for fans and be the final regular season contest for the Cougars before the playoffs begin on Wednesday, September 7th (Opponent and site to be determined).
