Columbus Flips Script With Shutout Victory

Columbus Flips Script With Shutout Victory

August 31, 2022 – International League (IL)Iowa Cubs News Release

COLUMBUS, OH – After throwing a shutout in game one last night, the Iowa Cubs (57-68) were shutout by the Columbus Clippers (72-51) tonight, falling by a score of 7-0, Wednesday at Huntington Park.

It took the Clippers just one inning to score more than they did all of last night, getting a solo home run from Brayan Rocchio to take a 1-0 lead. They were shut down in the second inning but got back on the board in the third with a six-spot.

The six-run third was highlighted by a three-run home run by Ernie Clement, giving Columbus a 7-0 lead over the I-Cubs. In his second start this year against Iowa, Logan Allen spun 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out five.

Iowa threatened in the fourth loading the bases with nobody out and in the fifth with runners on first and second with no outs but couldn’t get to Allen either time.

With Iowa down 7-0, Hayden Wesneski came out of relief for the first time all year and tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two base runners. Unfortunately for the I-Cubs, Columbus’ bullpen matched Wesneski pitch-for-pitch to keep Iowa off the board and even the series at one game apiece.

POSTGAME NOTES:

– Iowa’s season high for strikeouts in a single six-game series is 64 done back on May 3-8 against St. Paul. Through two games here against Columbus, they have already struck out 28 times, good for 44% percent of their series high.

– Hayden Wesneski spun five innings of scoreless relief tonight, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three. He used just 56 pitches to get through five innings, throwing 73% (41-of-56) of them for strikes.

Iowa and Columbus will play game three of their six game series tomorrow night, with first pitch from Huntington Park is set for 5:15 CT. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
