Chiefs to Host Neurodiversity Awareness Night on Sunday, October 9

October 6, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL)Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. – The Spokane Chiefs are proud to host their first-ever Neurodiversity Awareness Night this Sunday, October 9. The show is going to look and sound a little different in the Spokane Arena when the team hosts the Portland Winterhawks in an effort to be more inclusive to the neurodiverse population.

“This game provides a unique opportunity to offer an enjoyable experience to members of our community that they may not have at a typical Chiefs game otherwise,” Spokane Chiefs Vice President of Sponsorship and Operations Jay Stewart said. “We plan on a softer approach to some of the game elements and hope that it is an enjoyable experience for everyone.”

Sunday’s game day experience will be different from the average Chiefs game fans are used to, including:

Music will be quieter, no fan noise makers will be handed out for this game, public address will be limited, and there will be no fire alarm/fog horn type sounds except for the goal song

The arena lights in the bowl will stay on for the entire show, with no dimming or black out

The Gonzaga Exceptional Bulldogs will participate in a Mite Skate during the first intermission

The Integra Rooms located outside section 110 will serve as a quiet room and will remain available for the entire game to anyone who needs it.

Sensory kits will be provided by the Isaac Foundation and can be checked in and out at the Integra Rooms (limited quantity available). These will include fidget devices, headphones, weighted blankets, communication cards and more.

The Chiefs are proud to partner with several local organizations to help support the neurodiverse community including the Isaac Foundation, Northwest Autism Center, The ARC of Spokane and more. The organization is incredibly excited to host this special event and welcome new fans into the building.
