Chiefs Put up Strong Offensive Effort, But Fall to Cougars 5-3

Spokane, Wash. – The Spokane Chiefs fought until the final buzzer, but lost 5-3 to the Prince George Cougars Saturday night.
The Chiefs kept the Cougars at bay through the first period and controlled most of the frame, outshooting Prince George 17-8 but they were unable to find the twine.
The Cougars opened the scoring at 3:45 in the second period when Noah Boyko netted his second goal of the year. Chase Wheatcroft followed that up with his ninth of the season at 16:47.
Carter Streek answered less than 30 seconds later with his first goal of the season. Rookie Cole Wadsworth notched his first WHL career point on the play with an assist.

Riley Heidt got one back for Prince George with under a minute left in the period on a penalty shot to make it 3-1 going into the second intermission. The Chiefs again outshot the Cougars, 14-8.
Spokane was firing on all cylinders in the final period, with veteran forward Cade Hayes scoring his second of the year just 52 seconds into play to bring the Chiefs within one.
Wheatcroft capitalized on the man advantage at 2:40 to make it 4-2, Cougars, but Tommaso De Luca was quick to get Spokane back on the board with his second of the season as he cleaned up a rebound from Bertholet. Rookie blueliner Will McIsaac also earned an assist on the play.
That’s as close as the Chiefs would get, as Koehn Ziemmer sealed the deal at 13:59.
Spokane put up one of their strongest efforts of the young season, outshooting Prince George 43-28.
Special teams still struggled to find their footing and went 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Mason Beaupit started in net for the Chiefs and turned away 23-of-28 shots faced. Beaupit also marked his 2,000th WHL career save Saturday night.
Up next, the Chiefs will hit the road to face the Portland Winterhawks Sunday evening before returning home for a two-in-two next weekend.
