Chiefs Avoid Shutout, But Lose 3-1 to Oil Kings Friday Night
October 7, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL) – Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. – The Spokane Chiefs avoided a shutout, but ultimately lost to the Edmonton Oil Kings, 3-1, Friday night at Spokane Arena.
Edmonton struck first, as they capitalized on the man advantage late in the opening period as Mason Finley scored his third goal of the year. The Oil Kings carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period again didn’t see a goal until the final five minutes of the frame, when Shea Van Olm (16:30) and Cole Miller (19:56) each found the net for back-to-back goals to push Edmonton’s lead to 3-0.
Spokane seemed to come alive in the third period, putting up 22 shots on net – nearly twice their combined total through the first two frames. Jake Gudelj picked up one of those shots on a rebound and chipped it over the left shoulder of Edmonton netminder Kolby Hay to get the Chiefs on the board at 6:52. Cade Hayes and Berkly Catton earned assists on the play.
Spokane had two power play opportunities throughout the rest of the frame, but couldn’t convert them into a score. Special teams struggled throughout the night, going 0-for-6 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The Chiefs outshot the Oil Kings 34-22, including 22-2 in the third period.
Spokane netminder Mason Beaupit stopped 19-of-22 shots faced, while Kolby Hay turned aside 33 Spokane shots on the other end of the ice.
