Capitols Top Youngstown 5-3 in Series Opener
October 13, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Madison Capitols News Release
The Capitols hit the road on Thursday night to kick off a two-game series with the Youngstown Phantoms. The last time that Madison played in Youngstown, the team was starting their playoff journey toward the 2022 Clark Cup Final.
In the first period, Madison swarmed the offensive zone outshooting the Phantoms 13-6, but it was Youngstown kicking off the scoring in the first period. The first goal of the game gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead headed into the first intermission.
The second period had much of the same offensive prowess for the Capitols, but in the middle frame, results started coming in for Madison. Less than two minutes into the middle frame, Miko Matikka found his fourth goal of the season to extend his goal streak to four, but more importantly, tie the game at one all.
A plentiful amount of power play chances were had by the Capitols on Thursday evening with six opportunities on the man advantage. The Capitols were able to find the back of the net on the team’s second opportunity with Nicholas Fascia burying a rebound put on net by Finn Brink. Fascia’s first career USHL goal gave the Capitols their first lead of the night at 2-1.
After Youngstown tied it back up at two a side, the Caps found themselves back on the power play. Not satisfied with only one power play goal, Madison got themselves a second goal at five-on-four with Peter Cisar registering the first of USHL career. The Cisar tally gave Madison a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
In the third, the Capitols gave themselves a 4-2 lead thanks to the first of the season from Conner Schneider. Madison held the 4-2 lead until the very last minute of the game when Youngstown climbed back within one. Nathan Lewis was able to get the Caps their two-goal lead back with one second left on the clock with a short-handed empty-net goal.
The Capitols took home a 5-3 victory over Youngstown to move to 3-3-0-0 on the season and into a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference. The Capitols outshot Youngstown 36-24 on Thursday night with Madison converting on two out of six power play opportunities.
The two teams will face off again on Friday night with puck drop scheduled for 6:05 pm CT. The Capitols look to go for the sweep in their first two-game series of the season.
