Buckberger Named USHL Defenseman of the Week
October 26, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Lincoln Stars News Release
The United States Hockey League (USHL) announced Wednesday that Stars defenseman Boston Buckberger has been named Defenseman of the Week for Week 5 of the 2022-23 season.
Buckberger scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the Stars’ 4-3 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers this past Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Ice Box. He also led all skaters in the game with a plus-three and helped lead the Stars complete a comeback victory.
“We stayed up on the bench and we were never going to give up,” Buckberger said. “We were going to persist through whatever we had to. We didn’t want to lose at the Ice Box again, we want to win here every time. I think that the bench got fired up after Doug scored and it was just going to keep going in so that was awesome.”
Buckberger is off to a fast start in his first season with the Stars. The Wisconsin commit is tied for second on Lincoln with 10 points (2+8) and is tied for the team lead in plus/minus with a plus-seven. He has been exceptional as the Stars’ top power-play unit quarterback with an assist on all but one of Lincoln’s seven goals on the man advantage.
The Stars defenseman spent last year with the Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and finished second among his team defenseman with 31 points (13+18) in 59 games. Buckberger helped the Bandits claim the Inter Pipeline Cup as AJHL champions by scoring two goals and adding seven assists in the postseason.
Buckberger is the second start to be honored as a USHL Player of the Week, joining Cameron Whitehead, who won Goaltender of the Week for the first week of the season.
