Bats Go Quiet in Quad Cities’ Loss to Beloit

September 2, 2022 – Midwest League (MWL)Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Beloit, Wisconsin – The Quad Cities River Bandits left ten men on base and batted 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position on Friday, as they fell to the Beloit Sky Carp 5-2 on at ABC Supply Stadium.

While the Q.C. offense went quiet late, it was the Bandits who took the first lead of the game, plating a man off of Beloit starter Jake Walters on Kale Emshoff’s RBI single in the second before they took a 2-0 lead in the third, scoring a run on an error.

The advantage wouldn’t last long though, as Harrison Spohn, in his first start as a Sky Carp, tied the game with a two-run homer off of Rylan Kaufman in the bottom of the third.

In the fourth, Beloit took advantage of Zach Zubia’s leadoff walk and jumped in front on Brady Allen’s RBI triple for his first hit in Beloit. One batter later, Allen would score on a Kaufman wild pitch, making it 4-2 Sky Carp.

While Quad Cities would get the leadoff man aboard in four of the game’s final six innings, they would only move one man into scoring position and were held off the board for the rest of Walters’ start and for four innings by Matt Given and Jake Schrand, who each worked a pair of frames out of the bullpen and earned a hold and a save respectively.

Chazz Martinez, who allowed one run in 2.0 innings, and Devlin Capellan, who worked a scoreless eighth, kept the River Bandits within striking distance out of the bullpen, but Quad Cities mustered just one hit over the last four innings of the game.

Walters (1-2) earned his first win of the season for Beloit, allowing two runs, one earned, in a 5.0-inning start, while Kaufman (1-7) struck out six in his 5.0 innings, but took the loss, responsible for four runs on five hits and three walks.

Quad Cities will look to collect their third win of the week on Saturday, as they’ll turn to Beck Way (2-3, 4.38) for the start against Beloit’s Gabe Bierman (1-0, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm at ABC Supply Stadium.
