Lumberjacks Presenting the Famous Jack Pine Lumberjacks at Friday’s Flannel Fest

MUSKEGON – If you’ve ever visited Mackinaw City, you’ve likely heard of the Jack Pine Lumberjacks, a popular group of real-life lumberjacks who entertain thousands every year with their woodsy type of unique talents, including log rolling, axe throwing, chainsaw carving and more.

The Muskegon Lumberjacks are excited to bring the family-oriented show to town as the featured attraction at this year’s Flannel Fest, scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. along Western Avenue outside of Trinity Health Arena in downtown Muskegon.

Flannel Fest will immediately precede the Lumberjacks’ 2022-23 regular season home opener against the rival Chicago Steel at 7:05 p.m.

The Jack Pine Lumberjacks will put on two shows, starting at 4:30 and 6 p.m. There is no charge for admission.

The Jack Pine Lumberjacks will bring along a 5,000-gallon portable pool so they can perform log rolling for the crowd. They will also perform axe-throwing, upper-hand chop, cross-cut swinging and chainsaw carving.

The chainsaw carving part of the show is particularly entertaining for youngsters, according to Carly Livingston, the Lumberjacks’ director of game presentation.

“They start out with a stump and turn it into something, then they turn it into something else and then something else,” Livingston said. “They get the kids involved, and it’s a lot of fun. The kids here will love it.”

For those who are inspired by the Jack Pine Lumberjacks and want some hands-on fun, Muskegon Axe Throwing will be on site to allow fans to toss an axe at a target for $5.

The good news is that the weather on Friday is supposed to be sunny with a high in the upper 60s – a big improvement from the conditions that greeted last year’s inaugural Flannel Fest.

A cold, steady rain fell throughout the afternoon, putting a damper on the event.

This year there will be no risk of getting wet and cold, and the Lumberjacks are expecting a good crowd.

“The weather was not on our side last year,” Livingston said. “It was freezing outside. We had a pretty good turnout for the first year, considering the horrible weather. This year it looks like the weather is going to be awesome, with the sun making it feel even a little bit warmer!”

Besides the Jack Pine Lumberjacks, Flannel Fest 2022 will also feature food trucks from Da Kidd Bar-B-Que and Lake Effect Kitchen, face painting for children between 5 and 7 p.m., and special exhibits with free treats from Betten Baker and RAIR Cannabis Company.

The Lumberjacks created Flannel Fest to help fans celebrate the start of the new Lumberjacks season.

The mini festival was designed in the knowledge that Lumberjacks fans are a diverse group. Some are die-hard hockey fans who are glued to the action on the ice, while others come out to enjoy the many other types of entertainment incorporated into game nights.

The Lumberjacks have a packed schedule of special events for home games this season, including Bike Night (Oct. 7), Military Night (Nov. 11), Teddy Bear Toss Night (Dec. 9), North Pole Night (Dec. 10), 13 Loves Pets Night (Jan. 13), Craft Beer Night (Feb. 3) and Star Wars Night (Jan.14).

“We want to create a buzz and get people excited for another season of Lumberjacks hockey,” Livingston said. “We’re want to show everyone that it’s going to be a great season for us, on the ice and off.”
