ICE Announce Opening Night Roster

The Winnipeg ICE are set to open the 2022-23 Western Hockey League regular season tomorrow night in Brandon.

Today, the ICE announced their opening night roster as they engage in the Battle of Manitoba presented by Taylor McCaffery Lawyers.


With Conor Geekie (Arizona), Carson Lambos (Minnesota), Mikey Milne (Minnesota) and Matthew Savoie (Buffalo) currently attending NHL Training Camps, leading the charge will be 20 year old forwards Owen Pederson, Connor McClennon and defenceman Ben Zloty. Pederson, McClennon and Zloty are coming off career seasons in 2021-22 where they set a personal best statistically along with Winnipeg’s 53 wins and a league high 111 points.

The ICE added five players since last May’s appearance in the WHL Eastern Conference Championship Series: Steven Arp, Jaren Brinson, Keegan Maddocks, Josh Medernach and Briley Wood.

After getting a taste of the WHL for the first time last season, Josh Mettimano,, Ashton Cumby, Jonas Woo, Aiden Oiring and Ty Fraser will attempt to earn full time roles on this years roster

Nine players are home grown from Manitoba: Steven Arp, Skyler Bruce, Dawson Cowan, Evan Friesen, Conor Geekie, Omen Harmacy, Carson Lambos, Jonas Woo and Briley Wood.

17 year old Connor Dale, who registered 27 points in 36 games last season with the Yale Hockey Academy U18 Prep team, is the lone player on the active roster who will be making his WHL debut when called upon.

Between the pipes, 18 year old Daniel Hauser will start in goal after finishing last season as the WHL’s Top Goaltender in the East Division. Hauser led the league with a 2.00 goals against average and eight shutouts. Dawson Cowan and Keegan Maddocks continue to compete for a spot on the roster.

Tomorrow’s regular season opener in Brandon against the Wheat Kings gets underway at 7:00 inside Westoba Place. The broadcast team of Brian Munz and Kevin Olszewski will have the pregame show on CFRW 1290 AM starting at 6:30. You can also watch the game online via WHL Live on CHL TV.
