The Aftermath: Storm Opens Season with Win over Capitols

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA – The Tri-City Storm opened the 2022-2023 regular season with a 4-1 victory over the Madison Capitols Thursday evening at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. The game was the Storm’s opening game of the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic. Sebastian Törnqvist and Nick Roukounakis each netted their first career USHL goals in the win for Tri-City. Graham Gamache and Kieran Cebrian also notched goals in the victory for the Storm. Sebastian Wraneschitz collected the win in net after stopping 29 of Madison’s 30 shots on goal. Tri-City will face Muskegon tomorrow evening before returning home to host the Omaha Lancers for the 2022 Home Opener at the Viaero Center on Friday, September 30th.
Sebastian Törnqvist netted the Storm’s first goal of the season just over three minutes into Thursday’s 1st period. The goal was the first of his USHL career and was scored on the powerplay. Cameron O’Neill and Trevor Connelly each notched an assist on the scoring play. Connelly’s assist was the first assist, and first point of his USHL career. Graham Gamache scored an additional 1st period powerplay goal to increase the Storm’s lead to two goals. The goal was netted at 12:14 of the period and was assisted by Tanner Adams and Cale Ashcroft. Ashcroft’s assist was his first assist, and first point of his USHL career. Tri-City outshot Madison 14-9 in Thursday’s 1st period, and the team carried a two-goal lead into the 2nd period.
Kieran Cebrian scored his first goal of the season six minutes into the 2nd period to give Tri-City a 3-0 lead. Kaden Muir and Samo Meritähti each collected an assist on the scoring play. Meritähti’s assist was the first assist, and first point of his USHL career. Nick Roukounakis scored his first career USHL goal at 15:39 of the 2nd period to increase Tri-City’s lead to four goals. Kieran Cebrian and Cameron O’Neill each recorded an assist on the scoring play. Madison outshot Tri-City 13-10 in the 2nd period, but trailed by three goals entering Thursday’s 3rd period.
The only goal of the 3rd period was scored by Madison’s Quinn Finley at 10:05 of the period. The goal was netted on the powerplay and was assisted by Miko Matikka and Nick Wallace. Tri-City was outshot 8-2 in the 3rd period, and 30-26 overall, but defeated Madison by a final score of 4-1.
Sebastian Wraneschitz recorded the 14th win of his Storm career in net after stopping 29 of the Capitols’ 30 shots on goal. Mason Kucenski turned away 22 of Tri-City’s 26 shots on goal and recorded the loss in net for Madison.

Tri-City hits the ice again on Friday, September 23rd, in a neutral site game against the Muskegon Lumberjacks at the 2022 USHL Fall Classic.
