$16.50 Campaign Starts Saturday
September 21, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa – Each hockey season since 2007, the Waterloo Black Hawks and Slumberland Furniture have partnered to raise funds for charitable causes in the Cedar Valley. Beginning in 2019 with the addition of “The Fan,” KCNZ 1650-AM, the effort has been known as the $16.50 Campaign, and it returns with the beginning of a new hockey season this weekend.
At its essence, the $16.50 Campaign is an effort to crowdsource a meaningful donation to a different Cedar Valley organization each month during hockey season. The “crowd” – Black Hawks fans and Fan listeners is encouraged to contribute the suggested amount of $16.50, with the goal that 100 people will answer the call. During September and October, the Husome Strong Foundation is in the spotlight.
“We believe that part of the Black Hawks’ mission is to make the Cedar Valley a better place to live, and that goes beyond the 30 nights we play home games,” said Joe Greene, Black Hawks president of business operations. “It’s great to have partners like Slumberland and Coloff Media who approach their work with the same spirit, and it all hinges on fans who are passionate about both their home team and their hometown.”
The Husome Strong Foundation has promoted and facilitated adaptive sports in the limb loss community since 2015. Their efforts include helping to acquire specialized golf carts for use on public courses in the Cedar Valley, an annual free golf clinic for those who have lost a limb, and other activities to fulfill their mission of assisting “…people who have experienced the loss of a limb and are seeking assistance to realize their full potential and live their lives to the fullest…”
Fans can link to the Husome Strong Foundation’s donation page through waterlooblackhawks.com or 1650thefan.com. A new organization will be highlighted monthly through April.
The Black Hawks’ regular season opener will be broadcast Saturday afternoon on Coloff Media’s Cruisin’ KCFI (1250-AM and 105.1-FM) with pregame coverage beginning at 1:10 p.m. Central. Most other games during the regular season can be heard on The Fan, 1650-AM/102.3-FM.
