Fidel Barajas Called up to Mexico U-17s for Syrenka Cup
September 21, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL) – Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Battery winger Fidel Barajas has been called up to the Mexico U-17 national team for the country’s upcoming matches in the Syrenka Cup in Poland.
El Tri are one of eight countries participating in the tournament. They will be joined by the youth squads of Portugal, Poland, England, Uzbekistan, Norway, Romania and the Czech Republic in the competition.
Barajas is looking forward to the opportunity to play for Mexico again and grow as a player.
“It feels amazing to be called up once again to represent Mexico, it’s an honor to be selected among hundreds of eligible players my age playing around the world,” said Barajas. “By playing against European and Asian teams, I get exposure to different playing styles, which enhances my own game. The more exposure I am able to get, the more it will help me get used to facing different opponents.”
Mexico will first face Portugal on September 23 in Piaseczno, Poland. They will then play matches on September 25 and 27, with the opponents to be determined and based on the results of the preceding rounds.
Barajas has three caps with the Mexico U-17 team. He competed with the team during the International Dream Cup in Japan in June 2022. Fidel featured in matches against Japan, South Korea, and Uruguay, scoring one goal against South Korea and contributing two assists against Uruguay.
The youngster signed with the Battery in early September, his first professional contract, and is a dual youth international with both Mexico and the United States. Barajas was included in the squad for the first time during Charleston’s September 16 match against Memphis 901 FC.
Barajas is hoping to make the most of the week of matches in Poland as he continues to develop as a young professional.
“To have the opportunity to play on an international stage at a young age is fulfilling because it gives you a sense of pride and satisfaction that is hard to explain,” said Barajas. “You have the chance to represent both your country and your club at the same time.
“Being able to play in other countries also allows me to see the world and get a feeling for other cultures and customs, which then makes you reflect and strive to be a better person.”
Barajas will return to the Lowcountry ahead of the Battery’s October 1 away match against Hartford Athletic.
