Massie Strong But Stars Fall in OT

September 15, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL)Lincoln Stars News Release

Lucas Massie made 18 saves in two periods in net but the Lincoln Stars lost to the Sioux City Musketeers, 2-1, in overtime on Thursday night at the Ice Box.

Massie came on to start the second period after Cameron Whitehead stopped all seven shots that he faced in the first period. Massie stopped all nine shots that he faced in the second period and 18-of-20 in total. His finest stop came on a one-timer after a cross-ice pass just over six minutes into the final period.

For the second straight game a Stars’ defenseman scored the game’s first goal. Cole Crusberg-Rossen hammered home a one-timer near the blue line for the game’s first tally. The goal was Lincoln’s second power play marker of the preseason and the first allowed by Sioux City after killing off nine penalties in their first two preseason games.

Though the Stars scored the game’s first goal, they would give up the next two. Sawyer Scholl cashed in on two-on-one rush the other way to tie the game and then Ben Doran netted the overtime winner to send the visitors home with a victory.

A couple Stars penalties late in the second period gave the Musketeers a 5-on-3 power play that would stretch into the third period. They were unable to score thanks to a strong Stars penalty kill. Boston Buckberger helped out his netminder by blocking a shot that was poised to find the back of the net but he get a piece of it and sent it behind the net. Lincoln’s penalty kill successfully killed all five Sioux City power plays on Thursday night.

The Stars fell to 1-1 in the preseason but can bounce back with a quick turnaround as they face the Omaha Lancers on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ice Box. The preseason wraps up on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 again versus Omaha, this time on the road.
