Stars Open Preseason with Win

September 13, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL)Lincoln Stars News Release

The Lincoln Stars took the ice for the first time in 2022-23 and defeated the Tri-City Storm, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the Ice Box.

The two teams combined for four goals in the third period but the Stars never trailed in the preseason opener.

The two teams traded back-and-forth chances in the first two periods and nearly entered the third period scoreless. Prior to getting on the board first the Stars best opportunity came on a penalty shot for Mason Marcellus after he was held at the 13:04 mark of the first but he was denied.

The Stars opened up the scoring with Boston Buckberger finding the back of the net on a one-timer. Tyler Kopff dug the puck out of the near corner and found Keaton Peters in the slot. Peters passed up a shot from a good angle and fed Buckberger for the game’s opening tally.

Sebastian Tornqvist tied it up early in the third on a goal eerily similar to the Stars’ first goal but Buckberger helped set up the next goal to give the Stars the lead for good. After Buckberger faked a slap shot and wristed a shot on net from the far boards it was Doug Grimes guiding a loose puck in the crease into the back of the net to make it 2-1, Stars, at 13:01 of the third.

The Stars doubled up their lead at the 15:26 mark of the third. Marcellus was denied a goal in the first period on the penalty shot but found the back of the net when Marcellus slid home a rebound home for the Stars’ third goal of the game. That tally marked the game’s lone power play goal as Lincoln went 1-for-3 on the man advantage and killed off all three Tri-City power plays.

That two-goal lead would be short-lived though as Alex Palchik followed up a shot far post and scored to bring the visitors within one for the game’s final goal just 15 seconds later after Lincoln scored.

Lincoln outshot Tri-City, 28-24, thanks in part to a 12-7 shot advantage after the opening 20 minutes.

Nicholas Von Kaufman turned aside 22 shots in net for the Stars and did not allow a Storm goal until the third period.

The Stars have an off day on Wednesday before continuing preseason action with three straight games to close out the week. They wrap up the week with a home-and-home set against the Omaha Lancers with Friday’s game at the Ice Box at 7 p.m. and Saturday’s game at Liberty First Credit Union Arena at 1:30 p.m.
