Storm Drops Preseason Decision to Stars

LINCOLN, NE – The Tri-City Storm dropped a 3-2 preseason decision to the Lincoln Stars Tuesday afternoon at the Ice Box. Sebastian Törnqvist and Alexander Palchik netted Tri-City’s goals in the loss. The game featured more than one hundred and twenty-five combined penalty minutes. The Storm will travel to Ralston, Nebraska for the team’s final game of the exhibition schedule on Thursday. Tri-City’s final matchup of the preseason against in-state rival Omaha will begin at 7:00pm CT.


The Stars outshot the Storm by a five-shot margin of 12-7 in Tuesday’s 1st period. Lincoln’s Mason Marcellus was denied on a penalty shot opportunity by Storm netminder Karlis Mezsargs at 13:04 of the opening period. Each team was unable to score during the game’s opening twenty minutes, and the 2nd period began in a scoreless tie.

The Stars broke through with the game’s opening goal in the final minute of Tuesday’s 2nd period. The goal was scored by Boston Buckberger at 19:26 of the period. Keaton Peters and Tyler Kopff each notched an assist on the play. The Storm trailed the Stars by one goal entering the 3rd period despite outshooting Lincoln 7-6 in the 2nd period.

Sebastian Törnqvist notched his second goal of the preseason at 2:12 of the 3rd period to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Törnqvist’s goal was assisted by Ryan Smith and Philippe Blais-Savoie. Doug Grimes gave the Stars a one goal lead at 13:01 of the period. Grimes’ goal was assisted by Boston Buckberger. Mason Marcellus gave Lincoln a 3-1 lead with a powerplay goal at 15:25 of the period. The goal was assisted by Doug Grimes and Klavs Veinbergs. Alexander Palchik quickly answered for the Storm with his first goal of the preseason at 15:41 of the 3rd period to bring Tri-City back within one goal of the Stars’ lead. Arvega Hovsepyan and Sawyer Boulton each recorded an assist on the play. Tri-City was unable to score with goaltender Niklas Erickson pulled for an extra attacker at the end of the game, and the Storm dropped Tuesday’s decision by a final score of 3-2. Each team notched 10 shots on goal during the 3rd period, and Lincoln outshot Tri-City 28-24.

Karlis Mezsargs stopped all 15 of the Stars’ shots on net during 30:12 of playing time in goal for the Storm. Niklas Erickson recorded the loss in goal for Tri-City in 29:03 of playing time after making 10 saves on 13 shots. Nicholas Von Kaufman collected the win in net for the Stars after making 22 saves on 24 shots.
