September 10, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)San Diego Loyal News Release

SAN ANTONIO – San Diego Loyal SC allowed a goal in the first half in a 1-0 loss against host San Antonio FC Saturday night at Toyota Stadium. Ignacio Bailone scored for the homeside, handing SD Loyal a third-straight loss for the first time this season.

SD Loyal will continue its fight to clinch a spot in the postseason next week when it returns home to host Phoenix Rising FC after playing on the road two weeks in a row.

Against San Antonio, SD Loyal allowed a goal by Bailone in the 30th minute. The Argentine scored for the first place team when he sent in a left-footed shot from inside the penalty area. Bailone took down a long pass and was left wide open to take the shot and bury it into the right wall of the net.

SD Loyal (16W-9L-4D, 52 points) created a handful of scoring chances in the first 20 minutes of the match that included shots by Alejandro Guido and Tumi Moshobane that ended in the hands of San Antonio goalkeeper Jordan Farr on both occasions.

It was Farr who helped keep the San Antonio FC shutout with key saves but his most important came when he blocked a penalty kick by Guido in the 60th minute. The SD Loyal midfielder sent a low shot to the left, but Farr dove to his right to block the attempt. San Antonio (20W-5L-3D, 63 points) had been whistled for the penalty kick after Mohammed Abu fouled Thomas Amang inside the box.

The SD Loyal attack was ignited by substitutes late in the match to try and break through. Kyle Vassell, Andrew Carleton and Jack Blake nearly scored in stoppage time but San Antonio’s defense stood its ground.SD Loyal moves to 5W-5L-4D on the road as it will now try to get back on a winning track when it hosts Western Conference rivals Phoenix Rising FC next Saturday, Sept. 17 (7 p.m.) at Torero Stadium.
