Atlanta United Falls 2-1 at Portland Timbers

PORTLAND, Oregon – Atlanta United fell 2-1 to Portland Timbers Sunday night at Providence Park. Josef Martínez scored his eighth goal of the season after coming on in the second half.

After a tightly contested opening half hour, Atlanta registered the first shot on target of the match in the 31st minute. Santiago Sosa played Luiz Araújo on from near midfield and Araújo was able to get in on goal and force a save from Aljaz Ivacic.


Portland got on the board from the penalty spot in the 38th minute. Referee Jon Freemon ruled that Juanjo Purata took down Santiago Moreno on a loose ball in the box. Moreno stepped up and unleashed a shot to the top left corner to beat Raul Gudiño, who made his club debut in goal.

Portland was awarded a second penalty kick in the 82nd minute after Sosa brought down a Timbers attacker inside the box. Dairon Asprilla stepped to the spot and slotted his kick down the middle of the goal.

Josef Martínez pulled one back for Atlanta in the 88th minute off a corner kick. One minute after coming on as a substitute, Marcelino Moreno played the corner into the center of the box to the six-yard line where Martínez rose above his defender and directed a strong header past Ivacic and into the side net.

Atlanta (8-13-9, 33 points) returns home to play Toronto FC on Saturday, Sept. 10 (7:30 p.m., Bally Sports South, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).
