I-Cubs and Clippers Split Doubleheader and Series

COLUMBUS, OH – The Iowa Cubs (59-70) and Columbus Clippers (74-53) split their doubleheader with Iowa taking game one 5-3 and dropping game two 1-0, Sunday at Huntington Park.
Columbus scored a run on an RBI single by Gabriel Arias in the first inning and that is all they would get against Caleb Kilian, who allowed just the one unearned run on five hits and three walks while striking out three.
Iowa answered in the third inning with a solo home run from Matt Mervis, giving him a hit in 13 straight games and a home run in three straight games. Darius Hill gave Iowa the lead with an RBI single in the fifth, but the Clippers came back with two runs in the home half of the sixth to go up 3-2.
As they did Friday night, Iowa came back in their last at-bat, getting an RBI single from Mervis to tie the game and a bases loaded two-run single from Jackson Frazier to go up 5-3. Ben Leeper earned his eighth save of the year with a scoreless inning to give Iowa a victory in game one.
The Clippers started game two the same way they did game one with a run in the first inning, this time on a solo blast from Brayan Rocchio. That was all the scoring either side would have, as Columbus’ pitching staff kept Iowa off the board for all seven innings.
Tim Herrin and Carlos Vargas combined to allow just three total hits while striking out seven over their five combined innings, maintaining a 1-0 lead for the Clippers. They were followed by Nic Enright who allowed a two hits, but struck out three to close out the game and earn a series split.
POSTGAME NOTES:
– With three runs in the seventh inning of game one, Iowa earned their 29th comeback of the year and their second in as many games against Columbus.
– Wyatt Short spun four innings of one-run ball in game two, allowing just one earned run in nine innings pitched this series.
– Matt Mervis went 0-for-3 in game two of the double header, breaking his 13-game hitting streak. The streak tied his career long set earlier this year with South Bend from April 20 to May 7.
