SD Loyal Allows Three Unanswered Goals in 3-1 Loss at Monterey Bay FC

SEASIDE, Calif. – San Diego Loyal SC allowed an equalizer in the first half and two goals in the second half in a 3-1 loss against host Monterey Bay FC Saturday night at Cardinale Stadium.
Nick Moon scored in the 19th minute for SD Loyal but the home team answered with a trio of goals to hand coach Landon Donovan’s team its second consecutive loss. Monterey Bay FC midfielder Sam Gleadle scored twice and forward Christian Volesky also found the net during SD Loyal’s first-ever visit to Monterey Bay.
SD Loyal, who finished with 10 men after defender Kyle Adams was sent off for a foul in the 66th minute, remains in second place in the Western Conference standings with a 17W-8L-4D record and 52 points as it heads into another road match next week at first place San Antonio FC.
Against Monterey Bay, SD Loyal was able to implement its style of play early on, resulting in an early 1-0 lead. Moon found the net with a right-footed shot that snuck past Monterey Bay goalkeeper Antony Siaha and hit the right wall of the goal. The SD Loyal midfielder creeped into the left side of the penalty box off a pass by Charlie Adams on a play that started with a ball from Alejandro Guido.
Monterey Bay (10W-14L-2D, 30 points) tied the match 1-1 when Gleadle sent a left-footed shot past SD Loyal goalkeeper Koke Vegas. Gleadle’s goal came after Jack Blake could not clear a long pass from Kai Greene, sending the ball backwards to a wide open space.
Volesky then gave the homeside a 2-1 advantage when he headed in a ball past Vegas. He found a cross by Morey Doner right at the goal line, leaving Vegas with no chance at a save attempt.
Monterey Bay’s final score came in the 87th minute when Gleadle pushed in a loose ball from outside the six-yard box.
