Valdez Goes Yard in Shutout Win over Buffalo

WORCESTER, MA – Enmanuel Valdez homered and Ryan Fitzgerald drove in three runs as the Worcester Red Sox (66-62) shut out the Buffalo Bisons (66-61) by a 9-0 final on Saturday afternoon at Polar Park.


Worcester scored the game’s first run when Valdez hit a solo home run over the Worcester Wall in the fourth inning. Over his last six games, Valdez is 9-for-25 with two home runs and eight runs batted in. The homer was his third off a left-handed pitcher this season.

The WooSox scored two more runs in the sixth, one on a wild pitch and another on a groundout from Johan Mieses.

In the seventh, Fitzgerald hit a sacrifice fly to extend the Worcester lead to 4-0.

Worcester broke the game open in the eighth, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Jarren Duran doubled in two runs. Pedro Castellanos grounded into a force out to bring in a run. Fitzgerald drove in two runs on his second double of the game to make it 9-0.

In his first start of the season, Chase Shugart tossed four scoreless innings. Shugart allowed only two hits without walking anybody and striking out three.

Darwinzon Hernandez, Durbin Feltman, and A.J. Politi finished off the shutout. It was Worcester’s ninth shut-out victory of the year.

The WooSox wrap up their six-game series with the Bisons tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at Polar Park. Bryan Mata is the scheduled starter for Worcester. Radio coverage begins at 12:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the rest of the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is live on NESN+.
