One Game, One Win

November 5, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL)Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks won their only game of the weekend, plowing past the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-1 at Young Arena on Saturday.

The Hawks never trailed, building on their second consecutive multigoal opening period to improve their season record to 6-5-0. Waterloo also finished well; with two third period goals, the team has now outscored their collective opponents 20-8 in final frames this season.

Waterloo defensemen were responsible for a goal and four assists before the first intermission. James Hong was the only forward with a point at the break. He stuffed in the rebound of Aaron Pionk’s shot at 9:02 to open the scoring. Jaedon Kerr also had a hand in creating the opportunity.

A little over five minutes later, Waterloo had three defenseman on the ice during a power play. Gennadi Chaly slipped a pass to Ben Robertson, whose shot from near the right circle led to another rebound. This time, it was Sam Rinzel who pounced, firing the puck from the left circle hashmark past Xavier Medina’s blocker.

Jack Spicer added a big save two-and-a-half minutes before intermission, using his right pad to deny a breakaway by Clint Levens.

Sioux Falls had their breakthrough at 8:57 of the second. With two seconds left on a power play, Will McDonough blasted home a one-timer from the left faceoff dot.

The Stampede could not add another power play score despite three separate advantages during the first ten minutes of the third period. Waterloo penalty killers finished the night four-for-five.

Shortly after Waterloo’s last kill, the Black Hawks earned a new two-goal lead at 9:39 of the third. Rushing into the offensive zone three-on-one, Garrett Schifsky and Gavin Lindberg passed back and forth before involving Gavin O’Connell, who finished his chance into an open side.

The Stampede played most of the last three minutes with an extra attacker, and Waterloo’s Myles Hilman capped the win by scoring an empty net goal with 34.2 seconds remaining.

Spicer made 23 saves for his third win in three starts. He had also won his USHL debut against Sioux Falls on October 21st.

The Black Hawks play a pair of home games next weekend against the Tri-City Storm. The action begins Friday at 7:05 p.m. with a game which represents The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls Red Kettle Kickoff for the 2022 holiday season. Fans in attendance will also receive a Black Hawks magnetic schedule while supplies last.
