Royals’ Third Period Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Hitmen

Calgary, AB – Victoria Royals defenceman Kalem Parker extended his point streak to three games with his first goal of the season in a 5-2 loss to the Calgary Hitmen on Thursday.
The Clavet, SK product has enjoyed a successful road trip with the Royals, recording eight points on one goal and seven assists over his last six contests.
It was also a special game for Royals defenceman Luke Shipley, who logged his 100th career WHL appearance, recording one assist in the defeat.
Team captain Riley Fiddler-Schultz led the way for the Hitmen with a pair of goals, while starting goaltender Ethan Buenaventura stopped 22 of 24 shots faced in the victory.
Meanwhile, Royals starting goaltender Logan Cunningham played a solid 60 minutes on Thursday, making 28 saves on 32 shots.
Kalem Parker gave Victoria (3-12-2-0) an early 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season at the 7:04 mark of the first, with forward Riley Gannon counting the assist.
Calgary (7-4-1-1) would respond with a goal of their own by forward London Hoilett (2) at 10:54 to tie the game at 1-1, where it would stay as the game entered the second period.
The Royals would run into some penalty trouble in the second, allowing Calgary to take their first lead of the game with a powerplay goal by forward Olier Tulk (6) at the 3:13 mark.
The Hitmen would double up their lead shortly after, following another Victoria penalty, with Matteo Danis (3) bringing the score to 3-1 at the 3:50 mark where it would stand entering the third.
Royals forward Matthew Hodson would bring his team back within one with an unassisted goal at the 7:54 mark of the third. However, Calgary would stymie the Victoria comeback bid with a goal of their own by forward Riley Fiddler-Schultz (8) at the 12:21 mark to make it 4-2.
Fiddler-Schultz (9) would then add an empty netter late in regulation, giving him two goals on the night and sealing the 5-2 win for Calgary.
Looking ahead, the Hitmen will remain at home this weekend as they take on the Medicine Hat Tigers at the Tsuut’ina Seven Chiefs Sportsplex in Calgary, AB.
Meanwhile, the Royals will wrap up their six-game Eastern Conference road trip with a battle against the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place. Puck drop is set for 6 pm PDT on Friday, Nov. 4.
