QMJHL Players of the Month Named for September/October 2022
November 1, 2022 – Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
Forward of the Month
Jordan Dumais – Halifax Mooseheads – 12GP, 12G, 15A, 27Pts
The Halifax Mooseheads are in the midst of a battle for top spot in the Maritimes Division and one of their not-so-secret weapons is dynamic winger Jordan Dumais. The 18-year-old from Ile Bizard, Quebec recorded multiple points in nine games, including four- and five-point outings against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on October 5 and 23, respectively. Dumais’ five-point outing was also his first four-goal game in the QMJHL. The third-year veteran notched the game-winner in half of the eight games won by the Mooseheads in October, while five of his tallies have come on what has been a lethal Halifax powerplay so far.
A third round selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Dumais enters November tied for the league lead in points, tied for fourth in goals and tied for third in assists. This season has been a repeat of his remarkable sophomore year, which saw him finish third in the league with 109 points.
Defenseman of the Month
Kale McCallum – Val-d’Or Foreurs – 16GP, 6G, 16A, 22Pts
The Val-d’Or Foreurs are making things tough on the competition this season due in large part to its explosive offence. Leading the charge from the blue line is Kale McCallum. The 20-year-old from Quispamsis, New Brunswick has been held off the scoresheet just twice this campaign. Included in this impressive start is his latest streak, which has seen him record 18 points, including six goals, in 10 straight games heading into November. Though highly skilled at distributing the puck, the fourth-year rearguard is no stranger to putting it on net as his 53 shots lead all d-men.
After finishing last season third in the QMJHL defensive scoring race, McCallum has raced ahead of all challengers early on with 22 points in 16 games. He was originally drafted in the eighth round by the Saint John Sea Dogs at the 2018 QMJHL Entry Draft.
Rookie of the Month
Bill Zonnon – Rouyn-Noranda Huskies – 16GP, 7G, 8A, 15Pts
The sixth overall pick of the 2022 QMJHL Draft, Bill Zonnon made the jump to the QMJHL with the reputation of being an electrifying offensive threat. A month into his major junior career has done nothing but validate those claims. The Montreal product, who turned 16 on October 3, put the league on notice by recording points in seven straight games and goals in four in a row during the month. Included in that streak was the first two-goal, three-point effort of his career. On top of that, Zonnon has found himself at an even or better +/- rating in nine games last month.
Before turning heads in the Q, Zonnon was a member of the Northwood School Huskies in the US Prep School ranks. He currently sits tied for the QMJHL rookie scoring lead.
Goaltender of the Month
William Rousseau – Quebec Remparts – 8-1-0-1, 1.58 GAA, .940 SV%, 2 SO
Check the top spot of the QMJHL standings and you’ll find the Quebec Remparts. Likewise, check the league goaltending leaders and William Rousseau’s name is bound to jump off the screen. The 19-year-old from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec has been a model of consistency since the season began, going the first six weeks of the campaign without losing consecutive games. Starting the season with a 23-save shutout against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens on September 23, the third-year veteran has added a second whitewash since then, turning aside all 32 shots in a triumph over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on October 20. Rousseau has made 25 saves or more in five games this season and enters November riding a four-game win streak.
The netminder sits tied for the league lead in both wins and shutouts, while placing second in GAA and save percentage. He was selected by the Remparts in the fifth round of the 2019 QMJHL Draft.
Honorable Mentions
Justin Gill (forward) – Sherbrooke Phoenix – 14GP, 15G, 12A, 27Pts
The Phoenix has ruled the Western Conference early on thanks in large part to the play of Justin Gill. The veteran center has found the scoresheet in 12 of his first 14 games, including a run of seven straight games with multiple points, helping lead him to a share of the scoring lead in the Q. The holder of five game-winning goals so far this season, Gill, who attended NHL training camp with the Vancouver Canucks this fall, is already more than halfway towards surpassing his previous season high of 46 points, set in 68 games last year.
Etienne Morin (defenseman) – Moncton Wildcats – 12GP, 6G, 9A, 15Pts
The Moncton Wildcats and their star defenseman, Etienne Morin, share a lot in common. For one, both keep piling up points. The sophomore blueliner, who is eligible for selection at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, keeps progressing, posting seven multi-point outings this season. Poised on both sides of the puck, Morin has finished with a +/- rating of even or better in nine of 12 games played. In the midst of all this, the Wildcats continue to climb the standings, earning points in eight straight games to finish the month.
Samuel St-Hilaire (rookie) – Sherbrooke Phoenix – 4-1-0-0, 1.59 GAA, .926 SV%
From the second he hit the ice in the Phoenix blue and white, St-Hilaire has never looked back. Picking up his first QMJHL win in relief on September 24th, the 18-year-old from St-Elzéard-de-Beauce, Quebec kept on impressing when called upon, finishing October on a three-game winning streak. The last of those wins was his most impressive to date, stopping 28 shots in regulation and overtime as well as all three shooters in the shootout to earn a victory against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on the 30th.
Charles-Edward Gravel (goaltender) – Blainville-Boisbriand Armada – 5-2-0-1, 2.12 GAA, .938 SV%, 2 SO
Gravel started the season on fire, posting back-to-back shutouts in wins over the Rimouski Oceanic and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, stopping a combined 77 shots in the process. Averaging 34 shots against per game to this point in the season, the third-year netminder has been more than up to the task, holding the opposition to three goals or fewer on nine occasions. He’s been the backbone of an Armada club that sits in the top half of the league for fewest goals against.
