Saints Spook Hawks During Halloween Weekend

October 29, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL)Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Dubuque Fighting Saints were propelled by a four-goal second period and defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 at Young Arena Saturday afternoon.

The result drops Waterloo to 3-4-0 during the month of October, with one more game remaining before the schedule turns over to November.

After a scoreless first period, Dubuque didn’t waste much time turning on the offense in the second. At the tail-end of a power play, a Hawks turnover set up Nils Juntorp for an unassisted goal from the left circle at 2:34. Less than a minute later, the Saints struck in transition at even-strength. Michael Burchill wasn’t the intended recipient of a pass but made the most of an opportunity when the puck came his way near the left dot.

The Saints added a shorthanded goal as the result of another turnover at 9:46. Riley Stuart made the interception, feigned a pass, then roofed his shot to make it 3-0.

The Hawks converted their next power play at 16:31. Sam Rinzel let go of a try from the left point, which was redirected into the top corner by Nicholas DeGraves. Nonetheless, Dubuque was ahead by three at intermission thanks to a rush which netted one more goal from Max Burkholder with 59.2 seconds remaining in the period.

The score held until 3:24 remained in the game. Gennadi Chaly prevented a puck from escaping the Dubuque zone, and Griffin Erdman set up Patrick Geary in the left circle. Geary put his shot in off the crossbar.

A late Fighting Saints power play helped run down the clock, and Dubuque’s James Reeder added an empty net goal with 3.8 seconds left.

The Hawks return to the rink for a Sunday afternoon game against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Tyson Fresh Meats presents trick or treating during the game, and everyone is invited to take the ice for a postgame skate after the teams leave the ice.
