Ice Dogs Split with Steel

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA The Chippewa Steel and Fairbanks Ice Dogs skated to a 1-1 split of a 2-game series at the Big Dipper Ice Arena over the weekend. The Dogs posted a 5-0 shutout of the visitors on Friday, before falling 5-2 to the Steel Saturday night. With a 10-6-0-0 record, and 20 points on the season, the Dogs remain in a second place tie with Janesville in the NAHL Midwest Division.

FRIDAY NIGHT
Ice Dogs goalie Kayden Hargraves stopped all 45 shots that came his way for his first shutout of the season as Fairbanks blanked Chippewa, 5-0. Kole Altergott and Marc Lund set the wheels in motion, notching first period markers to stake the Dogs to a 2-0 lead after the first 20. Joey Potter and Billy Renfrew, tabbed second period goals, while Tyler Herzberg closed out the scoring with a third period tally. Altergott earned Top Gun recognition from coaches and teammates. The 19-year-old out of Green Bay, Wis. had his best game of the season adding 2 assists to his first period goal, with 8 shots and a plus 2 rating on the night.
SATURDAY NIGHT
Goals from Brady Welsch and Billy Renfrew had the Ice Dogs out front 2-1 midway through the second period. Sam Rice scored the equalizer for the Steel at 14:53 to tie the game 2-2 heading into the final stanza. Goals from Mathew Brille and Kade Nielson, separated by just a minute and two seconds, changed the complexion of the game in the third period as the Steel took a 4-2 lead. Nielson scored his second of the period and 12th of the season to slam the door shut on a 5-2 Chippewa victory. Hargraves stopped 36 of the 41 shots he faced in taking the loss.
MIDWEST ROUNDUP
The Kenai River Brown Bears continue their hot start to the season with a home sweep of the Wisconsin Windigo. At 11-4-1-0 on the season the Brown Bears lead the Midwest Division with 23 points. The Janesville Jets took 3 of 4 points from the Anchorage Wolverines over the weekend, and are tied with the Dogs with 20 points. Springfield and Minnesota split a series in Cloquet. The Wilderness sit 5th in the division with 16 points, 2 back of the Steel. Anchorage, Springfield and Wisconsin round out the standings in the 8-team Midwest Division.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Dogs host the Jets in a 3-game series Oct. 27-29 (Thu-Fri) at the Big Dipper. Puck drops in Thursday’s game at 7 p.m. with the first face off coming at the traditional 7:30 Friday and Saturday night. The Dogs will wear special Halloween themed jerseys that GM Rob Proffitt will auction off during intermission of the three games. Tickets for all three games are available online or locally at:
