Rebels Continue Perfect Start To Season With 3-0 Win Over Raiders

October 22, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL)Prince Albert Raiders News Release

The Red Deer Rebels remained undefeated to start the 2022-23 WHL regular season, collecting their tenth win in a row with a 3-0 shutout win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday night. All three goals came on Rebels powerplays, with two of those goals coming in the second period.

A powerplay goal from the Rebels was the lone tally in the first period. On the first man advantage of the game, Jayden Grubbe opened the scoring with a scorching wrist shot from the right circle, beating Tihkon Chaika to put Red Deer up 1-0 9:03 into the game. The Raiders saw their first powerplay of the game less than two minutes later, and another one in the late stages of the first, but failed to score on either chance.

After 20 minutes, Red Deer brought their one goal lead into the second period.

Special teams was the theme of the middle frame again, as the Rebels scored twice more on the man advantage. Jace Isley started the second period scoring 5:16 into the frame with his fifth goal of the season which came on the powerplay to make it a 2-0 Rebels lead. Four minutes later on another powerplay, Jhett Larson extended the Rebels’ lead to 3-0 with his seventh goal of the season. Close to the midway point of the second, Red Deer went up by a trio of goals, with all three coming on the man advantage.

Prince Albert had two powerplays in the second period, but could not convert on their chances, as they went into the third period 0/4 on their man advantages compared to Red Deer’s 3/4. More importantly, the Raiders trailed 3-0 heading into the final regulation frame.

The Raiders held the Rebels off the scoresheet in the third period, but couldn’t find any goals of their own, as Red Deer handed the Raiders their second shutout of the season.

A skirmish late in the third period between Terrell Goldsmith and Kalan Lind summed up what was a frustrating night for the Raiders. After a breakaway from the Rebels was stopped by Chaika, Goldsmith grabbed Lind out of an ensuing pileup and proceeded to lay a couple of heavy haymakers on the Rebel forward. Goldsmith, along with Larson, who was also included in the fray, were both sent to the box for roughing with just under three minutes to go in the game, but the Rebels ended up on a powerplay when all was said and done.

As time wound down on the clock, the Rebels celebrated their tenth straight win to start the season, improving to 10-0-0-0, extending an already broken franchise record for consecutive wins to start a season. Meanwhile the Raiders fell to 3-7-2-0 with the loss, and will look to wrap up their three game Alberta road swing with a win tomorrow afternoon in Calgary. Puck drop is at 4pm.
