RoughRiders Hire New Assistant Coach

RoughRiders General Manager and Head Coach Mark Carlson rounded out his staff by hiring Michael Lysyj as an assistant coach. Lysyj joins assistant coach Jared Brown and goalie coach Evan Draves.

Lysyj, has spent this preseason as an Associate Head Coach for the 14U Buffalo Jr. Sabres and Development Coach at the Academy of Hockey. He led the Buffalo Sabres (NHL) development practices, the development practices for all of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres teams, and the St. Mary’s Prep Academy.


Lysyj spent last season as head coach of the North American Hockey League’s Corpus Christi IceRays and was an assistant coach on the USHL Des Moines Buccaneers (Nov. 2020-June 2021), where his role included forward development coach and power play coordinator amongst a list of team development responsibilities.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be joining The RoughRiders organization,” stated Coach Lysyj, “I look forward to moving to Cedar Rapids and contributing on the ice and in the community. Mark Carlson has built a strong culture within the organization, and I am grateful for the opportunity he has presented me. I look forward to joining his staff and can’t wait to get to work.

Before joining the Buccaneers organization, Lysyj worked one season as an assistant coach (WHL/CHL) Everett Silvertips as a forward development coach.

“We are excited to have Michael join our program,” said Carlson “He brings a lot of experience, knowledge, and passion for the game. Michael has been deeply rooted in the junior hockey ranks for many years. His experience in the NAHL, USHL, and WHL has created a vast network of coaches and scouts. I look forward to working alongside him this season.”
