Eagles in the Win Column After Shootout Victory over Wildcats

October 18, 2022 – Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)Cape Breton Eagles News Release

MONCTON – The Cape Breton Eagles outlasted the Moncton Wildcats in an epic goaltending duel in New Brunswick on Tuesday night. The Eagles prevailed 1-0 in the shootout to capture their first victory of the season.

The game took four minutes to find its first shot on goal and first whistle. The lack of shots early was indicative of how the score would finish, but not the amount of scoring chances the teams would generate. Both clubs had opportunities before period’s end in the opening 20, including some chances for Moncton’s Yoan Loshing in the final minute. Moncton was able to kill the only penalty of the first period.

The middle stanza saw more special teams play, including a 1:32 stretch in the final five minutes of the period. One of the best chances came short handed, as Eagles forward Charles Boutin was denied on a breakway. Both goaltenders were kept busy- Moncton’s Jacob Steinman and Oliver Satny, playing his first game for Cape Breton after being acquired in the morning. Shots in the second period were 16-15 in favour of the Wildcats.

It looked as though the deadlock was broken in the third period when Samuel Johnson got a piece of a Cam Squires shot and it went through Stienman and over the goal line. However, video review determined the play was offside. Overtime settled nothing as well, with both goaltenders continuing their sensational play.

After spectacular netminding ruled the regulation & overtime, the shooters had their time to shine in the shootout. Ivan Ivan and Thomas Auger took turns scoring through the five hole, and Johnson and Vincent Labelle both scored in the second round. When Squires scored in the third round, it came down to Moncton’s Cole Bishop. Despite having scored in his first two QMJHL games prior to Tuesday, he was denied in the shootout and the Eagles took the victory.

In addition to Santy coming over from Charlottetown, defenseman Olivier St-Louis made his Eagles debut after a trade from Baie-Comeau. He registered one shot on goal in his Eagles debut. Defenseman Lincoln Waugh also played his second game with the Eagles following his recall from Summerside.

The Eagles will now head home to take on the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Thursday night- it’s the only visit the Huskies will make to Sydney this season! Puck drop is 7 PM.
