Owen Phillips Named to Canada’s U17 Roster

Rookie defenceman Owen Phillips will be representing Canada during next month’s 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The 16-year-old Halifax Mooseheads blueliner was one-of-66 players from across the country to be given the honour by Hockey Canada in today’s announcement. Phillips will suit up for Canada Red in the event which runs from November 3rd to 12th in Langley and Delta, B.C.
Phillips, a native of Hammonds Plains, NS, was the seventh overall pick in July’s QMJHL Entry Draft and has impressed with his decision making in his first few games in a Mooseheads uniform. He scored his first career goal on October 8th in Charlottetown as he notched the game-winning goal in a 3-1 Halifax victory. Phillips is one of only two Nova Scotians to be named to Canada’s roster, joining Upper Tantallon’s Quinn Kennedy of the Rimouski Oceanic.
A total of nine QMJHL players will represent Canada including; Victoriaville goalie Gabriel D’Aigle, Cape Breton defenceman Tomas Lavoie and forward Thomas Desruisseaux, Baie-Comeau forward Justin Poirier, Rimouski defenceman Spencer Gill, Chicoutimi forward Maxim Massé and Blainville-Boisbriand forward Éliot L’Italien.
The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, which returns for the first time since 2019, will feature three Canadian teams (Red, Black and White) matching up against Czechia, Finland, Sweden and the United States to compete for a gold medal.
The players chosen to represent Canada at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge were selected by Alan Millar (Tottenham, Ont.), director of player personnel, Byron Bonora (Brooks, Alta.), U17 head scout and Dave Brown (Niagara, Ont./Erie, OHL), U17 Program of Excellence management group lead, with assistance from Hockey Canada’s regional scouts Darrell Woodley (Kitchener, Ont.), Rob Simpson (Coburg, Ont./London, OHL), Pierre Cholette (QMJHL) and Darren Sutherland (Hockey NS/Blainville). Scott Salmond (Creston, B.C.), senior vice-president of hockey operations, also provided input.
Each team will play six preliminary-round games between Nov. 3 and 11, with the top four teams in the standings advancing to the medal round. The Langley Events Centre will host 16 games, including three all-Canadian matchups and both medal round games on Nov. 12. The seven remaining games will be played at Delta’s Sungod Arena, beginning with Team Canada White facing Sweden on Nov. 3.
TSN and RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, will provide coverage of the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Broadcast schedules will be announced in the coming weeks.
