The Aftermath: Storm Drop Home Opener to Stars

KEARNEY, NE. – The Tri-City Storm dropped the team’s annual Home Opener at the Viaero Center by a final score of 6-3 to the Lincoln Stars on Saturday night. Tanner Adams, Graham Gamache, and Phillippe Blais-Savoie each netted a goal in Tri-City’s loss. The Storm will return to action next week with back-to-back road games on Thursday and Friday against the Fargo Force and Sioux City Musketeers. Tri-City’s next home game at the Viaero Center will take place on Saturday, October 29th, in a rematch of tonight’s battle with the Lincoln Stars.


Tanner Adams netted his second goal of the season at 4:33 of the 1st period to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Kaden Muir and Trevor Connelly each notched an assist on the scoring play. Muir’s assist was his second of the season. Connelly’s assist was his third of the year. Tanner Ludtke scored back-to-back goals for the Stars at 7:26 and 18:55 of the 1st period. Lincoln captured the lead following Ludtke’s fourth goal of the season, and second goal of the game with just one minute left to play in the period. Doug Grimes and Antonio Fernandez each recorded an assist on Lincoln’s opening goal of the game. Mason Marcellus assisted on Ludtke’s second goal of the period. Each team recorded 13 shots on goal in Saturday’s 1st period, and the Storm trailed 2-1 entering the 2nd period.

The Stars notched three consecutive goals during the 2nd period to stretch the lead to four goals. Doug Grimes scored his third goal of the season at 14:20 of the 2nd period to give Lincoln a 3-1 lead. Boston Buckberger and Mason Marcellus recorded an assist on the scoring play. Grimes’ goal was netted on the powerplay. Keaton Peters scored his fourth goal of the season at 15:13 of Saturday’s 2nd period. The goal was assisted by Patrick Raftery and Jack Larrigan. The final goal of Saturday’s 2nd period was scored by Lincoln’s Jared Mangan at 5:13. Mangan’s goal was his second of the season and was assisted by Hagen Moe and Cole Crusberg-Roseen. The Stars outshot the Storm 10-8 in the 2nd period, and carried a four-goal lead into the 3rd period.

Graham Gamache scored a powerplay goal at 6:01 of Saturday’s 3rd period to bring the Storm within three goals of the Stars’ lead. Gamache’s goal was assisted by Cale Ashcroft. Ashcroft’s assist was his second of the season. Antonio Fernandez recorded his first goal of the season at 11:07 of the period to give Lincoln a 6-2 lead in the game. Boston Buckberger and Mason Marcellus each notched an assist on the scoring play. The final goal of Saturday’s game was scored by Philip Blais-Savoie at 11:35 of the 3rd period. The goal scored by Blais-Savoie was the first of his USHL career. Tri-City was outshot 10-6 in the 3rd period, 33-27 overall, and fell by a final score of 6-3.

Karlis Mezsargs recorded the loss in goal for the Storm after making 27 saves on 33 shots. Cameron Whitehead collected the win in net for Lincoln by stopping 24 of Tri-City’s 27 shots on net during the contest.

The Storm dropped to 3-3-0-0 through the opening six games of the 2022-2023 regular season.
