The Aftermath: Storm Drop Road Battle with Stars

LINCOLN, NE. – The Tri-City Storm dropped a road battle to the Lincoln Stars by a final score of 6-3 Friday night at the Ice Box. Sebastian Törnqvist (2), and Cale Ashcroft scored goals for Tri-City in the loss. The Storm will return to action tomorrow night in Kearney for the team’s annual Home Opener at the Viaero Center. Puck drop for tomorrow’s Home Opener is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.


Brennan Ali scored his second goal of the season for the Stars at 5:38 of Friday’s 1st period to give Lincoln a 1-0 lead in the contest. Ali’s goal was assisted by Marian Mosko and Klavs Veinbergs. Daniel Sambuco scored his second goal of the year for Lincoln minutes later to bring the game to a 2-0 score. Wyatt Olson and Jared Mangan each provided an assist on the scoring play. DJ Hart netted his first goal of the season at 8:33 of Friday’s 1st period to increase Lincoln’s lead to three goals. Sebastian Tornqvist scored his second goal of the season at 12:30 of the 1st period to cut into the Stars’ lead. Seth Constance notched an assist on the scoring play for the Storm. Cale Ashcroft netted an unassisted goal with less than three minutes to play in Friday’s 1st period to bring Tri-City within one of Lincoln’s lead. Mason Marcellus scored his third goal of the season with less than thirty seconds to play in the 1st period to give the Stars a 4-2 lead. Shots on goal were 12-12 in the 1st period, and the Storm trailed by two goals entering the 2nd period.

Lincoln’s Jared Mangan and Brennan Ali netted the only goals of Friday’s 2nd period. Mangan’s goal was notched at 9:41 of the period and was assisted by Keaton Peters and Brennan Ali. Ali’s goal was scored at 19:38 of the 2nd period and was assisted by Michael Mesic. The Storm outshot the Stars 12-11 in the 2nd period, but trailed by four goals entering Friday’s 3rd period.

The only goal of the 3rd period was scored with less than two minutes to play by Sebastian Törnqvist. Törnqvist’s goal was his second of the game, and third of the season. Ryan Smith notched an assist on the scoring play. Smith’s assist was his first assist, and first point, of his USHL career. The Storm outshot the Stars 9-8 in the 3rd period, and 33-31 overall in the game.

Cameron Whitehead recorded the win in goal for the Stars after stopping 30 of the Storm’s 33 shots on net during the game. Niklas Erickson started the game in goal for Tri-City and recorded the loss. Erickson made 8 saves on 12 shots during Friday’s 1st period. Karlis Mezsargs played the final two periods of the game in goal for the Storm and made 17 saves on 19 shots.

Saturday’s Home Opener at the Viaero Center features a Rivalry 4-Pack ticket package presented by the Nebraska Lottery.
