Djordje Petrović Named Finalist for MLS Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year and Newcomer of the Year
October 13, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrović has been announced as one of three finalists for both the 2022 MLS Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year and 2022 MLS Newcomer of the Year awards. In addition, Petrović is one of 16 finalists for MLS Save of the Year Presented by Allstate.
MLS will announce the winners of the 2022 year-end awards over the coming weeks, culminating in the presentation of the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player award in early November ahead of MLS Cup on Saturday, Nov. 5. Goalkeeper of the Year will be announced on or around Oct. 20, with Newcomer of the Year to be revealed on or around Oct. 24. MLS Save of the Year presented by Allstate will be decided by online voting at MLSsoccer.com until Friday, Oct. 14 (5 p.m. ET).
Petrović, the Revolution’s 2022 Team MVP and Players’ Player of the Year, debuted with New England in May after arriving from Serbian first-division side FK Čukarički. The young goalkeeper quickly established himself as an elite MLS shotstopper, delivering seven shutouts over 21 starts in his debut campaign. He posted four consecutive clean sheet performances from July 23 to August 13, matching a club record. In the process, Petrović guided New England to a 402-minute shutout streak, the second-longest run without conceding a goal in Revolution history.
Petrović, who signed a three-year contract extension with New England and celebrated his 23rd birthday last week, posted a 75.7 save percentage on the year, second best in MLS among goalkeepers with at least 30 saves. That is the third best single-season mark for a Revolution goalkeeper and the highest since Matt Reis in 2009. He accumulated four penalty kick saves on the year, the most in a season by any MLS goalkeeper since 2017.
Petrović concluded the year with seven performances of five-or-more saves, including a season-high eight stops on Sept. 13 at Houston Dynamo FC. In that match at Houston, he recorded a triple-save in the 71st minute to earn his nomination for MLS Save of the Year Presented by Allstate. Voting is open to the public through to Friday, Oct. 14 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
This marks the third consecutive season the Revolution have seen a goalkeeper named among the finalists for the league’s top goalkeeping honor. Matt Turner claimed the award in 2021 and finished second in 2020 Goalkeeper of the Year voting.
