Hockey Helps the Homeless Waterloo Region Tournament Raising Funds for Local Homeless Support Partners
October 13, 2022 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) – Kitchener Rangers News Release
For the past eight years, a group of local dedicated volunteers have run a hockey tournament where all proceeds raised have helped agencies that assist homeless men, women, and youth in Waterloo Region. Hockey Helps the Homeless (HHTH) is a national charity that runs one day pro-am tournaments in 14 cities across the country. Average hockey players get to lace up their skates for a day with NHL Alumni and Olympians, all while fundraising for the event in the preceding weeks.
To date, HHTH Waterloo Region has raised $1,618,000 to support our partners in the emergency shelter network, which include oneROOF Youth Services, House of Friendship, YW Kitchener-Waterloo, Lutherwood’s Safe Haven Youth Services, and the Cambridge Shelter Corporation. These proceeds equate to approximately 21,025 shelter bed nights which we have helped fund.
The 9th annual tournament takes place Friday, October 28th at RIM Park from 8:00am – 4:30pm. The public can watch games for free, browse and bid in the online auction, and maybe even meet some of the NHL Alumni and Olympians. Some of the Pros attending this year include Shayne Corson, Gilbert Dionne, Jayne Hefford, Megan Bozek, Nic Spaling, and Raffi Torres.
Again, this year, we are collecting new adult winter gloves for our Drop the Gloves campaign to distribute amongst the five homelessness partners we support. Please consider bringing some items to the tournament.
If you are attending the Rangers game on Sunday October 16th at 2:00PM, be sure to bring along some winter adult gloves, as we will be collecting them for our Drop the Gloves campaign. At each entrance there will be a couple HHTH hockey bags along with game day staff helping fill the bags with your donations. All winter gloves will be distributed to our five homeless partners.
Also, at the game visit our table in the north concourse to find out more about our tournament, and fill out a ballot to win a HHTH jersey.
HHTH Waterloo Region would like to thank the Kitchener Rangers for being an awesome Community Partner and supporting our tournaments over the years.
