Steel Face off against Team USA (U17) this Weekend

October 12, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL)Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS – The Chicago Steel finish up a stretch of three consecutive road games with a pair of contests against Team USA (U17) at USA Hockey Arena on Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15 this weekend.

Over the last three seasons, no junior teams in the world have produced more NHL draft picks than the Chicago Steel and Team USA.

Last weekend, the Steel were defeated 6-4 by the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Oct. 7 at Fox Valley Ice Arena but rebounded for a 6-4 win over the defending Eastern Conference champions, the Madison Capitols, on Oct. 8 at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena in Wisconsin.

In the two-game weekend, Steel forward and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Nick Moldenhauer scored four goals including his first career USHL hat trick in the victory over the Capitols, securing the USHL Forward of the Week honor for the first time in his career.

Moldenhauer has totaled nine points (7G, 2A) through six games thus far in the 2022-2023 season, the most of any skater in the USHL.

Steel netminder Jack Stark made 42 stops in the victory against Madison, matching his career best. The Yale University commit has turned away 115 total shots in the early going this year, the second-most among all USHL goaltenders.

With five total matchups slated for this season, Chicago (4-2-0-0; 8 pts.) takes on Team USA (U17) (3-1-0-0; 6 pts.) for the first two this weekend with multiple family connections on the other bench.

Team USA forward Max Plante has tallied two helpers over his first two appearances for Team USA. Plante is the younger brother of Steel forward and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Zam Plante. Both brothers were part of Hermantown High last season, helping lead the Hawks to a Minnesota High School State Championship.

Steel defenseman Michael Hagens faces off against his younger brother, Team USA forward James Hagens who totaled a four-point night (2G, 2A) in a 6-4 victory against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the club’s most recent outing on Oct. 1 at ImOn Ice Arena in Iowa.

Both games may be streamed on FloHockey (subscription required) with free audio available on Mixlr.
