SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes finished the 2022 MLS season with a 2-2 road draw against Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field on Sunday afternoon. Forward Jeremy Ebobisse scored his 17th goal of the season, setting a new single-season career-high in goals, while forward Cade Cowell tallied his third goal of the season.


PayPal Park will host Drone Racing League (DRL), the world’s premier professional drone racing tournament this Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. PT. Spectators will witness the world’s best drone pilots race high-speed drones through an immersive neon-colored aerial course on the field of PayPal Park. For tickets, click here.

Final Season Record

The Earthquakes finished the 2022 MLS regular season with an 8-15-11 record (35 pts.).

MLS Debuts

Seven players made their MLS debuts during the MLS regular season (Oskar Ågren, Matt Bersano, Ousseni Bouda, Will Richmond, Rodrigues, Miguel Trauco, and Niko Tsakiris).

Professional Debuts

Cruz Medina, Emi Ochoa and Casey Walls made their first team debuts in a friendly match vs. Spain’s RC Celta de Vigo on July 20, 2022.

Perfect Attendance

Jeremy Ebobisse (34 starts) and Cristian Espinoza (33 starts) were the only players to participate in all 34 matches this season.

Big Crowd

The California Clasico at Stanford Stadium on Sept. 24 drew 44,200 fans, one of the highest attended matches in MLS in 2022.

PLAYER SPECIFIC – SEASON RECAP

King Jebo

Forward Jeremy Ebobisse concluded his season with career-high totals in goals (17), shots (103), shots on goal (46) and minutes played (2,951). His 17 goals this season places him third in goals among all American players in MLS, only behind FC Cincinnati’s Brandon Vazquez (18) and FC Dallas’ Jesus Ferreira (18).

Helping Hand

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza finished the season with a team-leading and career-high 14 assists and seven goals. He ties Eddie Lewis for the most assists in a single season in club history, and Richard Mulrooney for the third most assists in club history (44).

Attacking Threat

Forward Benji Kikanović finished his second MLS season with career-highs in appearances (30), goals (6), assists (3), and minutes played (1,371). He now has a total of 14 goal contributions (10 goals + 4 assists) in his first two years in MLS.

Dream Come True

In his sixth year with the club, goalkeeper Matt Bersano made his MLS debut. He also made three appearances in U.S. Open Cup competition against Bay Cities FC, Seattle Sounders FC, and Sacramento Republic FC.

Immediate Impact

Rookie Niko Tsakiris, 17, made 10 appearances during the 2022 season and started the team’s final three matches. His first career start came in the California Clasico at Stanford Stadium.

Getting Involved

Defender Paul Marie concluded his season with career-high totals in appearances (32), games started (26), assists (2), and minutes played (2,247).

Shea Forever

Shea Salinas retires from professional soccer after 15 MLS seasons, including 13 in San Jose. He ranks first in assists (50), second in games played (332), and ninth in goals (20) all-time in club history. He is one of just six players in MLS history with 370+ appearances and 50+ assists. He is also one of just 22 players, and 18 non-goalkeepers, to play 15+ seasons in MLS.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Leagues Cup 2023 Details unveiled as MLS and LIGA MX Clubs Face-Off in World Cup-Style Club Tournament

Major League Soccer (MLS) and LIGA MX announced last Thursday details about the dates, format, and hosting process for Leagues Cup 2023. The highly anticipated month-long competition will be held from Friday, July 21 to Saturday, August 19. Leagues Cup 2023 will feature a Group Stage with matchups determined by the 2022 Supporters’ Shield standings (MLS) and the combined Clausura 2022 and Apertura 2022 standings (LIGA MX). The 2023 Leagues Cup winner will qualify for the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16, whereas the second and third place teams will qualify for the Champions League Round One.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The Quakes Academy Boys’ squads held a winning record at home over the weekend, with the U13s (W 2-1) and U14s (W 9-0) defeating WSC Crush, and the U15s (W 5-0) and U17s (W 2-1) beating De Anza Force.

All four squads will next host their opponents on Sunday, with the U13s and U14s facing Atletico Santa Rosa, and the U15s and U17s playing Real Salt Lake.
