Central Valley’s Christian Chaney earns Player of the Week honors with goal, assist in win

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today announced the Team of the Week for Week 28 of the 2022 regular season with Central Valley Fuego FC forward Christian Chaney named Player of the Week. Chaney improved on his impressive form with a goal and an assist in Central Valley’s 2-0 victory over Tucson in Wednesday’s Western Clásico matchup.
Following a scoreless first half, Chaney lobbed in a well-weighted through ball to find the feet of recently signed forward Zahir Vazquez. The 23-year-old Vazquez took the ball and powered it into the Tucson goal for the eventual match-winning advantage. Later confirming the Fuego FC victory, Chaney slotted home a score of his own in the 68th minute. Chaney’s goal against Tucson was the Fresno native’s ninth of the season and fourth in his past six matches played.
Northern Colorado lead all teams with three named to the Team of the Week with its crucial victory over Tucson on Saturday. Elsewhere, Tucson and Chattanooga place a pair of the Team of the Week, while Charlotte, Omaha Central Valley and Greenville earn one spot each.
GK – Thomas Olsen, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: Forced on as a substitute just before halftime, Olsen conceded just one goal and made six stops to help the Hailstorm hold onto a crucial Week 28 victory.
D – Héctor Acosta, Charlotte Independence: The defender that contributed the most goals added per American Soccer Analysis, Acosta maintained 85% passing accuracy and 78% duel success rate top go along with five recoveries and four clearances.
D – Jacob Crull, FC Tucson: Crull created six chances on the offensive end and added 11 recoveries and won 8 of 10 duels on the defensive end.
D – Luca Mastrantonio, FC Tucson: Mastrantonio notched his second goal of the season in his side’s 2-1 loss at Northern Colorado. The 26-year-old Italian also recorded nine recoveries, five clearances and maintained 83% passing accuracy.
D – Timmy Mehl, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: Mehl was tied for the week lead in recoveries with 16 and aided Chattanooga’s 1-0 victory over NCFC with an additional three clearances and two blocked shots.
M – José Carrera-Garcia, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: Carrera-Garcia created five chances to go along with his assist of Juan Galindrez’s match winner against NCFC. The Red Wolves captain also won 100% of his tackles and completed 85% of his passes.
M – Conor Doyle, Union Omaha: In a 1-1 draw with Tormenta FC, Doyle scored the lone Omaha goal to earn a crucial home point and spot in the playoffs. Doyle reeled in 14 recoveries and created four chances.
M – Destan Norman, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: The hometown product from Fort Collins recorded his first professional goal to propel a shorthanded Hailstorm side to an improbable victory in a must-win match. The 23-year-old also recorded four recoveries and won five of six duels.
M – Wolfgang Prentice, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC: The Oakland Roots SC loanee recorded his first Hailstorm goal in a 2-1 victory against Tucson. The 22-year-old also created a chance and claimed seven recoveries.
F – Christian Chaney, Central Valley Fuego FC: The only player in Week 28 to record both a goal and assist, Chaney continued his good form by assisting Zahir Vazquez’s match-winning goal before scoring one of his own to finish off Tucson.
F – Jesus Ibarra, Greenville Triumph SC: Tied for the most chances created on the week with seven, Ibarra assisted Jacob Labovitz’s match winner in his side’s playoff-clinching 1-0 victory over Charlotte.
