Jacks Snap Losing Streak
October 10, 2022 – North American Hockey League (NAHL) – Odessa Jackalopes News Release
On Saturday the Jacks took the ice for game two against Shreveport. Odessa lost on Friday by a score of 3-1 and were looking to snap their six-game losing streak. As for the Mudbugs, a win would have tied them with Oklahoma City and El Paso for fourth in the South. For the second-straight night the Jacks had Gergely Orosz between the pipes for them.
The Jacks came out very aggressive in the opening period and were on the board within the first two minutes. The goal was scored by J.R. Perdion (2) after the Mudbugs goaltender, Tommy Aitken, turned it over behind his own net. It was the first time the Jacks had a lead all weekend. Less than five minutes later, Brendan Finn (1) went on a breakaway and converted. Making it a 2-0 lead for Odessa. The physical play stepped up between both teams resulting in a fight between Josh Austin and Hayden Nichol. The score however would hold when the horn sounded ending the first period. Both teams finished the first period with 12 shots.
Odessa picked up right where they left off as Tanyon Bajzer (2) made it a 3-0 Odessa lead after scoring 34 seconds into the middle period. After that goal, Shreveport replaced Aitken with Simon Bucheler. The Mudbugs would find the scoreboard a few minutes later after Logan Valkama (2) had the puck go off his leg and into the back of the net. With just under seven minutes remaining in the period, Emerson Goode (4) flipped the bouncing puck right past Bucheler. The Jacks would take their 4-1 lead into the second period intermission. Marking the first time this season they had a lead through 40 minutes of play. Shreveport was outshooting Odessa 26-20.
With no goals being scored in the final period, Odessa would go on to win 4-1. Snapping their six-game losing streak and now tying Corpus Christi for seventh place. It was also the first time this season that Odessa scored the first goal of the game and went on to win. The Mudbugs finished with 36 shots and the Jacks had 26. Odessa went 0/5 on the powerplay and Shreveport went 0/4. Head Coach Scott Deur had this to say about snapping the losing streak, “It feels great, I thought the guys played well for 60 minutes. Our five-on-five was great, and we really controlled that game. Now that we are off that streak hopefully, we can add to this new one with two games at home.”
The Jackalopes will be home for the first time this weekend when they face the El Paso Rhinos. Odessa will be wearing pink specialty jerseys in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They have also partnered with Pink the Basin and proceeds from the jersey auction on Saturday will go to benefit them and the Permian Basin. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7:15 pm CDT.
