‘Caps season comes to a close
October 9, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
SAINT PAUL, MN – Vancouver Whitecaps FC fell to a 2-0 loss against Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field to wrap-up their 2022 MLS season this Sunday afternoon.
The ‘Caps came into the match knowing they needed a victory to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs, and they tested Minnesota early with both Andrés Cubas and Julian Gressel forcing early saves from goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Despite the strong start, the home side opened the scoring. After Emanuel Reynoso won a ball in the midfield, Franco Fragapane’s strike found the back of the net inside the 17th minute.
Just minutes before halftime the ‘Caps had another great opportunity. Brian White won the ball as he appeared to be taken down in the box, with Ryan Gauld ending the play hitting a shot inches wide of the far post.
The second half saw the Blue & White hunting for opportunities. Following a run in the final third, Pedro Vite’s quick shot was saved by St. Clair in the 57th minute of the match.
The best opportunity came in the 63rd minute. Just a minute after coming into match, Cavallini found himself open in the box but could only get his header towards the far post where Brian White clanged it off the crossbar.
With the ‘Caps pushing numbers high, Minnesota’s Jonathan González found himself inside the area from a deflected cross, and his left footed finish then doubled his squad’s lead making it 2-0 in the 77th minute.
Despite fighting with a late push, the final whistle blew at Allianz Field as the 2022 MLS season concluded for the ‘Caps as they look ahead to the 2023 MLS season as well as the Concacaf Champions League. For information on season membership, visit whitecapsfc.com/seasontickets.
