Moose Stay Undefeated in Regulation
October 8, 2022 – Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) – Halifax Mooseheads News Release
Your Halifax Mooseheads Mooseheads kept their solid start to the season going on Saturday night in Charlottetown by staying undefeated in regulation through the first four games. The Herd scored twice in the second period and added an empty net goal late in the game for a 3-1 victory over the Islanders, improving to 3-0-1-0 on the year.
Following a scoreless opening frame, Mathieu Cataford struck on a two-on-one by taking a great feed from Jordan Dumais to score his fifth of the season at the 2:53 mark of the second period. He leads the Mooseheads in goal scoring and is among the QMJHL league leaders in the category. Halifax increased the lead to 2-0 later in the period when rookie defenceman Owen Phillips lit the lamp for the first time in his young career at 16:53 on a heavy wrist shot from the left face-off dot. Brady Schultz quickly skated to grab the puck from the officials to make sure the 16-year-old Phillips was able to keep the milestone. The Upper Tantallon, NS native was the 7th overall pick in July’s QMJHL Entry Draft.
Jordan Dumais also assisted on the second goal and has notched at least two points in all four games this season. He leads the team with 11 points and is tied for 5th in QMJHL scoring. The Moose tacked on another goal late in the game when Brody Fournier knocked a puck out of mid-air and buried it into the empty net to seal the deal for the Herd. Fournier’s marker was the first of his career after being signed as a 19-year-old free agent out of the CCHL in the offseason.
Charlottetown broke the Mathis Rousseau shutout bid in the dying moments of the contest with a shorthanded goal from Keiran Gallant at 17:49 of the third period but it was too little, too late for the Isles. Rousseau stopped 22 of 23 shots for his third win in as many starts between the pipes. Veteran Franky Lapenna took the loss at the other end of the ice with 28 saves on 30 shots.
Other players, picking up assists for the Maritimes Division leading Mooseheads were Jake Furlong and Markus Vidicek. Neither team had any luck on the man advantage with the Herd going 0-3 on the power play while Charlottetown was 0-4.
The next game for the Mooseheads is Thursday night at 7pm at the Scotiabank Centre when they entertain the Drummondville Voltigeurs. It’s the first student night of the season in Moose Country with $10 tickets for students with valid ID. Tickets are on sale now at TicketAtlantic.com.
