‘Somos Toros’ – RGV FC: Proud Latin Club in USL Championship

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC proudly recognizes their significantly high percentage of rostered players, technical staff, and front office staff of Latin descent in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month which celebrates Latin culture nationally from September 15 – October 15 annually.
Located in the southernmost tip of Texas, the Rio Grande Valley is a Hispanic dominant region which is home to an estimated 1.4 million residents, 92% of which are of Hispanic or Latin country descent.
RGV FC – “The Valley’s Team” currently boasts a near 67% Latin player roster, with 19-out-of-28 active players, and technical support staff being from or descendants of Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, and Venezuela. Sporting Director and Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera is a Colombian national who has served decades at U.S Soccer, Major League Soccer, and the United Soccer League’s USL Championship level.
As a franchise who emphasizes service to its community, the front office is led and made up of an impressive 99% Hispanic or Latino background. The front office focuses on initiatives which provide care and opportunities to underprivileged youth, in all of the Rio Grande Valley’s four counties; Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy.
Rio Grande Valley FC owner, Alonzo Cantu, is a prime example of the Hispanic roots that the club has flourished from as he is a proud Mexican – American and former migrant farm worker who established the club in 2016.
Toros Vice President Hondo Candelaria explains the significance of being a Latino majority club in this region; “The Latino culture has always been a very proud and outspoken supporter of their own roots and at RGV FC we enjoy focusing on what matters most, ‘Nuestra Gente’ – our people. This month and every day, we are proud to say, Somos Toros!”
