Schmidt’s Shootout Winner Lifts Team Blue over Team White in Training Camp Series

Kitchener, Ont. – With the series tied 1-1 through two games this week, game three was the deciding match of the 2022 Kitchener Rangers Training Camp, presented by The Armoury Sports Medicine and Performance Clinic. Team Blue and Team White were tied 4-4 after regulation before Team Blue’s Roman Schmidt recorded the game-winner in a shootout.


Kitchener-native Matthew Sop was first to strike to earn Team White the lead after he walked out of the left corner and made a skilled move before scoring backhand, top-shelf at 6:48.

Team Blue scored the next two goals to gain the lead. Mathieu Comeau fired a shot toward the net from the slot that was originally blocked by Adrian Misaljevic before Sop got his own rebound and scored blockerside at 10:51. Then, Reid Valade sent a pass from the top of the left circle to Cambridge-native Joseph Serpa backdoor, who held on with patience before sliding the puck into the goal far-side at 13:21.

Team White tied the game 2-2 at 16:22 before the team’s headed to the dressing room when Hunter Brzustewicz scored from the top of the left circle, shortside. First-half shots were 12-7 in favour of Team White.

Team White would score first in the second half at 4:51. Simon Motew fired a shot on goal before Jaxon Gawel got the rebound, held on with patience, and backhanded the puck past the Team Blue netminder. Then, while on a rush, Team Blue’s Kristian Lamanna shot far-pad from the left wall that caromed to Tomas Hamara’s stick who buried to tie the game 3-3 at 8:10.

Team Blue scored again with 1:55 remaining in regulation on a goal from Mitchell Martin, his second of the night, assisted by Carson Rehkopf. Team White tied the game 40 seconds later to force a shootout when Trent Swick found the back of the net at 18:45. Assists were credited to Motew and Sop. Shots were 11-11 in the final frame for a two-halve shot total of 23-18 Team White.

Eight skaters participated in the shootout but it was Roman Schmidt who was able to score to lift Team Blue over Team White to end the Kitchener Rangers 2022 Training Camp. Luca DiFelice made 14 saves on 18 shots in all 40 minutes of play for Team White. Evan Maillet started for Team Blue and made 10 saves on 12 shots in 20 minutes of action and Sebastian Monaco made 9 saves on 11 shots in the final 20 minutes of play.

Next up, the Rangers will host Fan Fest this Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. ET before hosting the Niagara IceDogs for the first preseason home game beginning at 2 p.m. ET at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. Fan fest is free to all fans. Tickets for the preseason game will be $5.00 (General Admission, one ticket price for all ages, children under the age of 2 are free) and can be purchased the day of at Fan Fest at the Rangers tent. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Make-A-Wish Canada.
