MISSISSAUGA, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads are excited to announce the signing of centreman Owen Beck to the Montreal Canadiens on a three-year entry-level deal. Beck is the first player in Steelheads history to play for the storied franchise and was drafted in the second round (33rd overall) by the team in the 2022 NHL Draft.

“It’s an honour and a dream come true to sign my first NHL contract!” said the 18-year-old forward. “I want to thank the Montreal Canadiens for making this dream a reality as well as everyone who has helped me throughout my career to this point as I could not have done it without their support.”

After being drafted by the Steelheads in the second round (29th overall) of the 2020 OHL Draft, the Port Hope, ON native excelled in his first year with the team last season. With 51 points (21G, 30A), he finished fifth in OHL rookie scoring, first amongst Steelheads rookies, and third in the Mississauga lineup. He also finished third in the OHL in faceoff wins (817) and set the franchise record for faceoff wins in a single season by a rookie. He also made an appearance at the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in March 2022.

In the 2022 Coaches Poll, Beck was the only rookie to lead a category, being recognized as the Best in Face-Offs in the Eastern Conference. He finished with a 60.6% success rate – the league-high for players who attempted at least 500 faceoffs. The centreman was also named to the second OHL All-Rookie team, voted on by the League’s General Managers. The forward saw lots of success off the ice as well, winning the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year award.

The Steelheads Head Coach and General Manager James Richmond had this to say about the signing. “Congratulations to Owen! We are very happy for him and proud of him. He has worked his tail off, not just on ice and in the classroom but has really put a lot of time in the gym getting stronger. Owen plays a complete 200′ game and is one of the best faceoff guys we’ve ever seen. We couldn’t be more thrilled for Owen and his family”

Congratulations to Owen and the entire Beck family!
