Win at Halifax Keeps Atlético Ottawa in First
October 1, 2022 – Canadian Premier League (CPL) – Atletico Ottawa News Release
After becoming the first team to secure a 2022 CPL Playoff spot, Atlético Ottawa concluded their four-week venture away from the capital city on Saturday when they visited the HFX Wanderers in resilient Nova Scotia. Looking to build up their lead on top of the rankings, the squad captured a determined 2-1 win, their eighth win on the road this season, but more importantly a win that sets them up nicely as they return home for the final match of the season with a league title firmly in their sights.
KEY MOMENTS
Atlético Ottawa solidified their spot on top of the CPL rankings with a 2-1 victory (48 points in 27 matches), breaking a couple of league records in the process.
Ottawa’s goalscorers on the day were Maxim Tissot (40′, his second of the year) and Zakaria Bahous (57′).
It was Bahous’ first goal of his professional career, he who continues to progress and contribute significantly, first with important U21 playing minutes, but now also by finding his scoring mojo.
GK Nathan Ingham made a handful of spectacular stops in the dying minutes of the match to ensure his side’s win.
Atleti have now reached 13 wins on the season, 8 of which have come on the road.
This 8th win on the road, combined with the 28 road points for Ottawa, ties and break the previous CPL record held by Cavalry FC, who had obtained 8 wins and 27 points away from home in 2021.
Entering Saturday’s match, Ottawa was still looking for 220 minutes of action from U21 players to reach the league-mandated 2,000 minutes.
Three U21 players earned a start for the match: Zakaria Bahous, Zachary Roy and Owen Antoniuk.
Between them, they added 192 minutes, leaving Head Coach Gonzalez with only 28 minutes to fulfill in the final regular season match.
Atlético Ottawa return to TD Place for the final match of the regular season on Sunday, October 9 (KO 6 PM ET).
This will be the closing match of the 2022 regular season in CPL, and could see Ottawa win the first-ever regular season title and award presented by the league.
The regular season finale will feature a halftime show featuring World Champion Hip Hip Dance Crew DM Nation and a post-match fireworks show.
