LINCOLN (2-0)
The Stars play their first home game of the 2022-23 regular season after sweeping the Dick’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic last week in Cranberry Township, Pa. Tanner Ludtke scored twice in a 4-1 win over Cedar Rapids and Cameron Whitehead stopped all 30 shots the next day in a 6-0 win against Green Bay. All told, eight different Stars found the back of the net in the pair of wins and Whitehead earned the USHL Goaltender of the Week by stopping 45-of-46 shots in the two games.
SIOUX FALLS (1-1)
The Stampede split their two games at the Fall Classic, falling to Muskegon, 7-4, before defeating Cedar Rapids, 8-0. Sam Harris recorded five points in the two games, including a hat trick in the win over the RoughRiders. Harris leads the USHL with four goals and five points through two games.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Special teams: The Stars went 3-for-5 on the power play and killed all eight penalties. They are one of three teams in the USHL who have not allowed a power play goal yet and are the only team in the Western Conference to accomplish that after their first two games… Sioux Falls went 3-for-8 (37.5-percent) on the power play and killed 12-of-14 penalties (85.7-percent). The Stampede were shorthanded 14 times in their first two games, tied for second-most in the USHL.
Netminders: Cameron Whitehead only allowed one goal at the Fall Classic and is the reigning Goaltender of the Week. He recorded one shutout last season in 31 games and has already matched that total two games into his second season with the Stars. Whitehead’s only shutout last season was a 33-save performance against the Stampede on Jan. 14, 2022, at the Denny Sanford Premier Center. He posted a 1.00 goals against average and .967 save percentage in three games against Sioux Falls last season, two of which came on the road. He stopped 22-of-24 shots against the Stampede on Nov. 5, 2021, a 5-2 Stars win at the Ice Box… Jackson Irving stopped 39-of-41 shots faced at last week’s Fall Classic, including a 27-save shutout last Friday against Cedar Rapids. Irving entered in relief of Aidan Spooner for the final two periods of the Stampede’s game against Muskegon after Spooner allowed five goals on nine shots in the first period.
